Using Attachment Animations

how would you go about making an attachment play different animations? in my map, a hero can pick up a chainsaw item. when the hero is just standing around, the chainsaw should not be running. once the hero attacks, the chainsaw should run.

i know that i could do this using triggers and two chainsaw attachments with different stand animations, but i guess my question is: is it possible to make one attachment play different animations besides 'stand'?
