I think we've strayed a little too far away from the terrain art that most terrainers here do, so why don't we have a nice old UTM contest with an epic theme, just like the good old days, eh?

Theme ideas:
- Cliffside Fortress (built into the cliff...)
- City of Wizards
- Haunted Woods / Haunted House
- Engineer City (steam-punk)
- Another shitty color theme... -.-'

I'm kinda liking the LotR theme. Although I'd say recreate anything from the books/movies.

Ooh, I can just imagine making Mordor.

I have some ideas:

1. Something based on Dante's Divine Comedy. Nine layers of Hell, Purgatory, or ten Heavens. If you haven't read Dante, I recommend this translation: Dante; Poetry of Dante Alighieri; full text of Dante's Divine Comedy - Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso, at everypoet.com
2. Something ancient-themed. Maybe an ancient Greek city, or mount Olympus, or something ancient Egyptian, or maybe even something ancient native american, you know, like Olmec or Maya.
3. The warcraft world a few hundred years later. That is, the warcraft world seems to be pretty medieval. What would it look like as a Renaissance world? I'd love to see what sort of stuff the horde would be building.
4. Something like "The Prison of the Titans!" Basically just designing an epic prison for the Dark Gods.
5. Something based on mythology. I guess this is kind of like no. 2, but this one would have more things like the dwelling places of the Gods, or the Underworld.
6. Palace theme. Basically making a dwelling-place for a ruler of some society. The idea would be to make it as decadent as possible, in terms of decoration.
7. Place of worship. Temple, altar, church, whichever. The objective is to make interior, exterior, and surrounding landscape of a place of worship for a certain religion (not necessarily an existing one).
8. Prehistoric. The landscape of the worlds of cavemen, mammoths, dinosaurs, the first land-creatures, or the ancient creatures of the sea.
9. Cataclysm. A cataclysmic scene of destruction. The events or aftermath of something such as a volcano, war, earthquake, hurricane, tornado, or anything else you can think of.

I like some of those ideas. After the current contest is over, I'll set up a poll.

HELL YEAH, I LOVED THESE ONES

Well, I'm totally with the mithology themes, but not against LotR.

I prefer mythology themes, I think I suggested that a while ago for terrain contest 4 or whatever but it never caught on.

So to expand on that, how about these:

Greek:
River Styx
Mount Olympus
Tartaros
Forge of the Gods
Poseidon's Fortress (under sea)
Halls of Hades

Norse:
Yggdrasil
Dwarven Forges
Valhalla
Jotunheim
Muspelheim
Niflheim
Utgard
or... RAGNAROK! :D

I dabble with lots of things ~Void~, and now that I got my editor running half way decent I could terrain something worth something I'm sure.

And I've been dying to try out a new terrain concept.

I call it "haiku" terrains. Basically, instead of a mass panorama, I instead focus on a highly detailed 'zoomed in' sort of picture. Like a Haiku instead of a full poem.

(I am better at little details anyway)

i think some new comers dont know what norse things look like >.>

though i would definetly be interested in making Yggdrasil... cause the world tree model is in wC3 already...

but LOTR is based on norse...so might as well have a lotr theme...about anything.

like shire, rivendel...or my favorite Anduin!

Elenai has terrained before, he made a decent Church once. His environment work around it sucked though.

Yay! I remember that in the Gloomy Terrain Contest (the last thing Elenai did on terraining), they said "Oh, Elenai has come back to terraining!". So he used to terrain a loong time ago.

Anyway, it'll be very nice with the Greek/Viking things (I don't think I'll do a good job with the LotR, lol).

I like greek/norse those are some good themes. but I completely disagree with LOTR. That would be like saying "Hey just make a terrain off of this picture! don't worry there is no creativity involved at all!" what I mean is that the whole thing has already been written and then made on screen. But my favorite theme was a castle/rulers dwelling place, because you could make this into a wide variety of things like a poison cave where a ginormous spider rules over smaller ones et cetera.

Who said you have to copy the movie? You could do your take on one of the cities, or you could do an area not covered in the trilogy. Something from his other writings.

Although whatever you do, it would have to be somewhat distinguishable. If you made Gondor for example, it would have to be multi-tiered, and white. But it doesn't have to look like the movies Gondor.
