[Tower Defense] TD Mechanic

Might not have time to make this, so sharing the idea here in case someone else wants to use it.

  • Towers do not shoot automatically.
  • Every shot is manually launched by the player.
    • The player has a "launcher" unit with a set of buttons, one for each available mortar/tower type.
    • Each mortar/tower is an item that is "sold" by this launcher (to indicate number of shots available), when the item is sold a trigger removes it and fires that attack.
    • Targeting would be done by simply launching attacks at the player's camera position. This is indicated by a trueshot aura model that follows the player's camera.
  • Whenever you build a new tower, its attack becomes available as a new item on your launcher.
  • When you build another of a tower you already have, it increases the maximum stock you can have of that item. Each tower will still create its own individual ammo and a trigger will increase the item stock.
  • Creeps will have various movement styles.
    • Move towards the goal as a regular mob.
    • Predict incoming mortars and move out of the way.
    • Scatter away from other nearby creeps.
    • Move randomly.
Gameplay will look like this:
You build new towers in the time between waves.
When the wave comes, you aim your camera at the spawn point and start hitting the hotkeys for your various mortars.

The issue of simply bursting waves down as they spawn can be mitigated by:
  • Spawns over time instead of instant group.
  • Wider/multiple spawn areas.
  • Creep abilities like divine shield.
