So, would anything special besides saving my map happen if I were to do it like this:
1. Entered the map using world editor's test button
2. alt tabbed the game
3. modified something
4. saved the map (the wc3 client is still running background at this point)

For some reason it bothers me that I did this today, that something would had gone "amiss" with the wc3 map file. So, would doing this do anything weird or janky?

nope

if you change somthing and go inside your map and test it and while testing still alt tab out and change somthing and save it nothing happens you just have to close your warcraft and just use the test again to re test on things you changed before starting the test.

also
Make it so editor autosaves in options
Options menu called "Editor Preferences" or smth
Serch for it at the top (file, veiw, etc)

and basiclly your editor saves i have mine to save every 15 minuts regardless if im testing in the game running the game on background or anything as of that matter

When you press test map, the map that wc3 runs is not the one you saved, instead, it copies the map, then runs it instead. Meaning you can freely save your map while it is being ran, because a copy of it is being ran, no that one.
This.

I'll try to word it more clearly for clarity :)

When you test a map, the editor saves it as a test copy called WorldEditTestMap.w3x (or something like that) instead of the file that you usually save your map as.

The map loaded for test purposes is the mentioned test copy, not your actual map file - thus you are free to make any changes and save them, because doing so will overwrite a different file (yourmaptitle.w3x) than the one loaded in the editor (WorldEditTestMap.w3x).

EDIT: As @Tasyen commented below, this only works if your map has any unsaved changes.

The test map button behaves depening on having unsaved changes or not. Unsaved changes are marked with an (*) at the end of world editor title.

  1. With unsaved changes an clone of the current map is created and this clone is played by warcraft 3, in this case you can do changes to your map and save it freely.
  2. Without unsaved changes warcraft 3 directly plays the map opened in world Editor, in this case you can not save the map in world editor while warcraft 3 is still playing it.

Yup, tested it - and you are completely right, thugh it's worth mentioning that in option 2 you will just get "can't save map" error message and nothing bad will happen :)
