How is reputation earned and what is it used for?

you earn reputation from other users. You may notice below my avatar, there is a button with √X, if you click that, you can leave message and give reputation to people(you are never required). The amount you give out depends on multiple factors(how much rep and posts you have).

Additionally, moderators, administrators and Ralle can also give you negative reputation, for bad behaviour or manners.

It is not really used for anything, you can at most show off or grow your ego, or act as elitist from having rep, or in elitist way, more rep than others.

I use it as a message system in order to comment on a post without posting in the thread (for off-topic or personal comments). The shiny gems are second to the actually useful system; not that I think we shouldn't have them.
