You can remove doodads if you use NEWGEN but only if they have animations. Fire has a kill animation right? If so get NEWGEN and via triggers you can play animation kill, which will stop the fire. Otherwise the much easier way is as mentioned before turn it into a destructible and then use remove destructible via triggers.
Use a destructible without pathing for the fire or with very little pathing so its more realistic.
