Aspergers Syndrome, ADD and ADHD are all quite common these days.
I like Ephy's theory: These diagnoses are bullshit.
The line between psychological conditions and normal behavior is very thin.
Too thin... <.< >.>
Is it me or does everyone seem to WANT a mental disorder?
Not just you. Disability privileges FTW.
It's you :D
I don't want one and I don't have one either.
That is not normal. You should have that checked.

As for me, I don't think I have any mental disorders, but my doctors disagree. They say I have clinical denial of diagnosis.

Im a diagnosed Aspergers and im not content with my diagnosis, im rather ashamed and embarrassed about it. I have my own social problems caused by other things, i dont like blaming such an easily thrown diagnosis because i have social problems, but i do admit they making working and socializing VERY VERY hard and difficult...

I think all the problems people say relate to my aspergers is just silly. I consider those problems just "me". I do get disability benefits for my aspergers and my other symptoms not relating to aspergers, so i find myself guilty about being paid while others work, when most people think im normal until they become intimate with me and my thought process (currently making relationships very hard for me).

I feel like a leech, im stuck inbetween being mentally handicapped and being able to work fine. I do have another set of symptoms relating to "something i wont say" but im medicated for it, hence "most" of it doesn't impair me, hence why im considered not mentally handicapped but medication dependent in order to function properly.

People believe i shouldn't seek diagnosis over it (my other set of symptoms not relating to aspergers) becuase im medicated, hence, problem solved! But i believe since it might make acquiring a job more difficult and the fact i dont like it when people judge me as "perfectly fine" because im medicated when i clearly know i have problems when i am not medicated. It makes me feel like people accuse me of pretending or making up problems that have effected my life and made it difficult.

But working in the workforce is very hard for me, i use to work in a hospital and it gave me VERY bad stress since i have trouble with memory and understanding vocal commands. The more i stress however, the less my medication works for my other symptoms not relating to aspergers and working become torture and torment.

But back to my aspergers, i was tested through about 7 people. They each tested one or so things like memory, cognitive function, IQ, vocabulary etc.
*I scored high in vocab (which makes no sense since i have shitty English skills and very limited vocab)
*High in cognitive function (uuhh..yeah..okay)
*Low in short term memory (Which i agree with, i have trouble remembering vocal commands, conversations. Mainly due to my short concentration/attention span)
*High IQ (wasnt told how high, but high for my age group.)
*Good Pattern and puzzle skills (was one of the fastest they had)
*They considered my thought patterns abit abnormal and abit disturbing.
*Having lack of empathy and being antisocial (i dont think the last part is relevant to my diagnosis, since I was depressed at the time)

But i still dont agree with my diagnosis, i think aspergers is just a silly label people nowdays most seek for merely comfort, financial security and to be "cool". Aspergers has brought me some security with finances but its brought me so much shame, guilt, anger and embarrassment. I wish people would just kill the diagnosis of aspergers, since its merely a light form of autism that does allow function in society, the misdiagnosis uses up resources and feeds the ego of psychs/their patients. The label is far too easily applied to kids who like too much anime, art or climbing trees. Or kids with no friends or bloody emos. Im sick of going to counseling and have some idiot counselor go "WOW!, you are aspergers? Are you awesome at maths?! i hear aspergers are the best at maths but suck at other things"

=_=

Wow, that gave me a totally new view of how it is. Never thought it was this bad. I can almost feel how you got it, but I can never truly understand or feel how it is as I've never experience anything like it before.

I've heard that Autistic people are really good at maths. I even saw a movie once about an autistic guy and he was really fast at counting and good at memorizing stuff. He totally pwnd in poker.

Rain Man?

Never seen that movie, but I know a little bit about it.

That can be true, but not necessarily so. People with Asperger's syndrome are good at what interests them. Just like normal people.

@Kimberly, I find it quite rude how you generalized like that. I don't go around yelling "I HAVE ASPERGER'S SYNDROME" to be "cool." I don't tell people I have the diagnosis just to feed my own ego. I only tell good friends of mine (of which there are few), as a matter of fact. Please use words such as "most" to make yourself seem less rude.

I'll jump in before anybody tears you a new one, although that would be way funnier. Asperger's is a mild form of Autism. The thought processes of Autistics have been compared to that of animals, although they still have the mental capacity of regular humans (mostly). Not just "shyness", crippling social inability.

That's a mile off the mark Mulgrim. If you know anything about autism, take autism and reduce all symptoms by a lot.

EDIT: >:O Animals think cool!

Yes, it's Rain Man.

Wasn't Aspergers in the movie, or in real life.

The character in the movie is based off of a savant by the name of Kim Peek, the reason you don't hear about Kim is because he has a face for Radio:
tmb_KimPeek.jpg

Apparently he has something called FG Syndrome, which is caused by an error in the X Chromosome.

My view is rather...displaced from the usual, so dont try to understand it too hard. Im a self hating aspergers, one who isnt happy with my diagnosis but tends to understand that i do have problems. Some of those problems not relating to aspergers though that make life hard, one being my paranoia/anxiety which im medicated for.

I've heard that Autistic people are really good at maths. I even saw a movie once about an autistic guy and he was really fast at counting and good at memorizing stuff. He totally pwnd in poker.
its not just maths :/ ... apparently it varies depending on aspergers peoples interests, eg. Puzzles, art, maths etc.

That can be true, but not necessarily so. People with Asperger's syndrome are good at what interests them. Just like normal people.
True.
I found it rude she would generalize maths on me, i HATE and DESPISE maths with all my heart, my passion is art and anthropomoprhism, not gerk...maths..ew...
I just wish some people wouldnt just say aspergers are good at ONE thing, in this case just being maths, then bad at all others.

You forgot the factor in me saying "for comfort". For comfort of diagnosis isn't necessary "IM COOL" either. I know some people who are like you with it, but i still think aspergers as a whole is a sham, for reasons i stated before. But yes, i understand generalizing like that is wrong, im sorry. I just got off into a rant on what i hate about aspergers in general.

i mean, if it bothers you to speak with people through the internet, assuming you have asperger's

Sorry that you didnt ask me, but ill explain through my opinion.

Aspergers are fairly fine on the internet. Most people nowdays on the internet have a poor sense of communication and in general are bigotted idiots due to the fact social phobias and physical forms of communication such as hand or facial gesture and tone of voice are removed.

In real life is much more difficult since aspergers have social phobias or social disinterest, they are usually slightly impaired with understanding how to communicate properly. Most have a lack of understanding of emotional cues (meaning they cant read emotions very well and find eye contact a useless thing). It is also said aspergers lack empathy, hence what they say or do may be hurtful or not very sympathetic (some aspergers have learnt to emulate empathy like me, i do have empathy, but i lack it or at times its completely absent). Concentration also plays a part, some aspergers have poor concentration and become disinterested in conversations more easier than normal people if it doesnt relate to their interests.

Aspergers also distract themselves very easily in conversations, if they have an interest they will speak about it to the point it may seem a distraction or a form of compulsion that they dont realize (not in all cases, im talking about this rather lightly).

But most of the the time its not that bad, it may sound "bad" but its not. Just abit hard or annoying (it annoys me alot).

I have gathered this information from self observation, psychiatrists/psychologists iv met in person and reading up aspergers.

EDIT: I do have eye contact with some people in general and i can read emotions, but i cannot read them when im talking about my interests or if im happy (when im paranoid i have a habit of over observing), hence why people get very annoyed with me. I also talk like im reading from a book (i mumble and stutter or im very quiet), hence why people also find that annoying and its hard to do school speeches.

Rain Man was probably one of the most touching movies I've ever seen. But it is still quite innaccurate at describing autism.
People who think autism is caused by a vaccine are pure idiots. Its been proven over and over, like evolution.

ITS NOT AUTISM >.<

Vaccines, ya, those are BS, just scapegoats for people who probably just abused the kid by leaving them alone in front of a screen all day.
Remember, very few Aspergers diagnoses are actually Aspergers, like Kimbo's

Note: I sit at a screen NOW, I didn't start sitting at a screen until I got a Nintendo 64, good times, goooood times.

It is also said aspergers lack empathy, hence what they say or do may be hurtful or not very sympathetic (some aspergers have learnt to emulate empathy like me, i do have empathy, but i lack it or at times its completely absent). The empathy part is partially true, I have no empathy for people I do not know well, although I find it easily enough to fake it.

And the concentration part, it is more of I cannot concentrate on things I do not like, but if I like it, total concentration to the point where you cannot hear people yelling at you.

... Thats weird... I have all those things O,o and I didn't knew it... seriously.. thats no joke.

Ive always had problems to understand other people, and if i get something to know I analyze it at all and try to use the analyzed knowledge...

And I got huge problems with concentration, I am nearly all the time talking stuff in the class... because I cannot concentrate on the teacher.. and I can hardly concentrate on math at all... but on somethings, which I like, I can concentrate all day...

Im the same, with concentration.

What a load of bollocks by the lot of ya. Aspergers Syndrome, (and Autism), which by the way is PSYCHIATRIC DYSFUNCTIONS, not Psychological, act out different on each individual.

I have Aspergers syndrome, and I'm not shy or afraid of the public, or even inept at social interraction. I'm a very linguistic and social person, partly because I've had the diagnosis since I was 14 (I'm 22 now), so I've learned to live with it. Some people are terrified of other people, some are overly social.

And Aspergers Syndrome is not something that just randomly appears when you watch TV or soming, it's something you're born with.

Read up on the dysfunction instead of just speculating, because it rather annoys me when you're openly discussing soming you don't understand, when I myself used to teach teens how to live with the dysfunction at school. (I used to be a teacher in a small class for teens with various psychiatric disorders, mainly Aspergers Syndrome. I teached something called "Life Experience", and it's to know your dysfunction, and how to adapt to society by learning how to deal wth your shortcomings, and accept who you are.).

I guess they do.
Great, now I got aspergers just by going on Hive.

Some people are just shy, and don't focus well on things they don't like. I hate the public, and am very unnatentive while I listen to stuff I dislike, but does that make me have aspergers?

Only say you have aspergers if you've been diagnosed by a proffesional. Otherwise your full of crap.

hard to do school speeches.

I think empathy sounds annoying. The more you care the more you worry. D:

Very well explained though. And school speeches are practically impossible for me.

I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, Slight OCD and ADHD by Tore Duvner, one of Sweden's leading experts on Psychiatric Disorders. I'm not 100% sure how old I was, but my best guess is around 14-15. So I'm good for it.

I was diagnosed by a professor and his interns at Stanford

I have a bit of OCD too, like how I always put silverware in the machine in a certain pattern

Yeah, like I always line up my mass-murder victims in star-shaped patterns in the alleys. Oh, and the fact that I mass-murder, I blame my OCD.
