So, before I ask the big question, let me get some stuff out of the way.

My roommate has an old (fat, prettier) PS3 which recently have been experiencing a Yellow Light of Death (Similar to 360's Red Ring of Death), due to a tiny fan.

His started doing it after a couple weeks playing Black Ops pretty heavily. (8-10 hrs a day between the two of us.)

He called up Sony and they of course said it's absolutely not the system, it's impossible for it to be the system, it's perfect, blah, blah, blah. Bullshit, basically. They also told him to get the Slim, cause it doesn't have the issue (Contradicting herself was hilarious).

So since his is broke, and i'd been meaning to anyway, I bought one. A Slim. Had it a couple weeks now, and it froze. Playing Black Ops.

Talked to a lady I know, said she bought a fan for hers, and it works fine, so I did so. My roommate got a little over 3 hours out of it before it froze again just a couple minutes ago.

Now, this is really bugging me. I've had my PS2 for years. I left my PS2 on for 2 weeks straight without turning it off once, and it was cool as metal in winter (With less breathing room) upon return. That was, of course an accident, as I went on vacation, and apparently forgot to turn it off. But it was in the middle of a game. It still works fine (Admittedly the laser is beginning to die on it, and it occasionally takes me two attempts to start a game, but it's bound to happen to them eventually).

So I'm curious. I'm going to go get a new one within the next couple days, maybe this one was a lemon or something, I'm not sure, but I'm wondering if anyone else is having a similar issue, regardless of the version? And if so, is there any option that's worked for you other than paying Sony $150 to fix their failure? Cause I refuse to do it. They already got $300 of mine for a faulty piece of machinery, they ain't getting more.

Any idea of what I should do if getting a new one doesn't work?

Only thing I can think of is call up Sony and threaten them, but I doubt that'll get me anywhere.

If anyone reads all that and replies with a legit answer, I'll be amazed.

alright i had my old 20 gig ps3 since it came out... had my first YLOD playing game called fracture.. got it a 2nd time playing uncharted 2... then a 3rd time playing fracture again... all i can tell u is i did all i could to repair it.. it all worked.. but it was all temporary... b4 the fourth YLOD was gonna struck i bought me a external hard drive to transfer all my files to it... i already replaced the 20 gig with a 250 gig.. so i decided to get a terrabyte hard drive... found out some of my files were corrupt and were not able to be deleted.. so wasted that external hard drive... and foolishly decided to play my ps3 with any source of backup.. and then the ps3 broke again... i tried to fix it again.. but it didnt work.. i broke one of the ribbon cable tabs attached to the main frame of the ps3...

i was so mad... all my files ever since i got it were all lost.. and then i finally decided to watch a youtube video of how to transfer saved data... it ends up all u need is a simple flash drive... i had no idea u could just nit pick at files instead of transferring the entire thing.. all my money and time wasted in vain... i just sure hope this happens to no1 else. unless well deserved.... the only way to fix the YLOD permanently is to get it refurbished.. or buy a new one... unless u want to professionally sodder your CPU/GPU accordingly.. but that is way to risky...

i recommend u watch these vids if u want to bring it back temporarily (i did it the best i could but only lasted 3 months...)
just watch vids 1-3 and follow step by step...

if u want your files when you get it back just use a flash drive... but for some reason if u have any games that were made in japan like Demon's Souls (WISH I COULD BACK THESE UP!).. DBZ games.. or any Japanese made game, they made it unable for u to copy them

if u desperately want those files then get a external hard drive or back up you hard drive... transfer those files to your new ps3...

Hope this helped... i hated every bit of it...

No YLOD, just overheating on the Slim.

On his fat 80GB, he's not even getting the YLOD, he's having the same issue.

Also, his IS refurbished. Mine's new. I'm thinking about just returning this one for a new one. I don't have any pertinent data on this one, it's all on my roommate's broken one (My FF13 data, which, according to you won't xfer anyway), and I ain't buying an XHD. Don't got the cash.

The fans are just shitty in the PS3. And as far as I can tell, there's nothing I can do about it but get a new one, and pray it works. I got a multi-year warranty though, so...

After cooling down, on mine (30 mins or so) I can play it for a few hours before it freezes again (I'm going 2-3 then taking a break as a temp problem solver, but it annoys me greatly as then I have 30 mins of boredom.), but on his old 80GB, it freezes between 5-15 mins.

How can a slim overheat!? It chews only 73 watts of power or something stupidly low.

I agree that the old PS3 could overheat and I heard that happening a lot (as it chewed 20% more power) but the new ones should not be overheating.

Anyway, you should have a year warentee to have the slim fixed free of charge for this sort of fault. I also advise stopping every few hours of play (like blocks of 4-5 hours) to let the system rest as it is not healthy to play for such long periods of time.

Make sure you vacume the console vents regually, dust build up restricts airflow and acts as an insulator and could easilly cause the 73 watts to become an oven inside.

Well it IS overheating. It's VERY annoying.

I'm stopping every 2-3 hours from necessity at this point.

I might have a bad one, who knows. But it's bugging the hell out of me for sure. Probably tomorrow before I go to work, I'm going to take a can of duster and a vacuum to it, see if that makes it better.

The fact that it overheated with the external fan on there really bugged me. $22 gone, =\

Oh by the way, external fans can cause problems.

My 360 was crashing due to an external fan causing ossilating and causing my disk drive to read impropperly. Not sure if that can happen to the PS3 but do be aware that it might be a problem.

Try elevating it off the ground as well (if you lie it flat like most consoles).

o and heres some more info about the exclusive ps3 fans that attach.. don't buy cause if u do attach it.. and let it stay there it will nearly be impossible to remove unless u wanna rip your ps3 in half :p i suggest a blow fan and place it on a solid base... not on the floor Especially not on the floor...!
