Hai thar guys,

it is about 4:15 AM right now, I went to bed at 0:30 AM and this night is going to be another sleepless night. I gave up trying to fall asleep the fourth time now and for me this is a proof that I am suffering on some kind of sleeping disorder.

I am kinda fed up about this and I really don't know what to do about it so I thought I might ask you guys. What do you do when you cannot sleep? How do you convince your brain to turn off?

I am grateful of any useful replies because this problem seriously is a pain in my ass.

Probably the best way to handle this [/irony]

You got Insomnia?
You can just have a bath to cool yourself up. If it doesn't work, forget everything, don't think anything, you will fall asleep.

Well, I usually fall asleep after some time, even when I worked out ... now I have holidays and nothing to do so I basically have too much energy left, I'd say. (Although I am kinda tired. Can't sleep though)
I should try a cold bath, I guess ... could help. :p
Forgetting everything, huh? I tried so often. I can't stop thinking, really XD

Avoid the caffeine- and sugar-containing foods, even better, avoid most food just before bed. If you eat before bedtime, your stomach will be still active, leaving you still awake.

And you completely moved your biorhythm to a late time now, try slowly setting it back by going to bed an (half) hour earlier.

And stop touching yourself in bed.

1-put the laptop away from you
2- if it's hot, turn on a fan and direct it towards you
3- do not let any source of light get in the room
4- try not to wake up at >= 12:00 in the morning
5- everytime you start thinking about something, just stop
6- don't drink tea/coffe/etc... try hot milk (without chokolate)
7- hot bath
8- do not eat salt and other things that can cause you to worry
9- D: Stop thinking!!
10- if next time you sleep at 3-4:00 AM then wake up early (9:00 for example if you cannot earlier)

1 - I usually do after watching an anime/etc. :p
2 - unluckily I don't own such a thing
3 - right, I hate light while trying to sleep xD
4 - nope, I already"fight against" waking up veeery late. It kinda works, I got up half an hour earilier than the past days since a few days.
5 - ARGH I guess here is my problem :D can't control my think-behaivour! I always think "don't think! don't think! don't think!" and BAAAM there starts teh random mind
6 - I drink a lot of milk .. though it's never hot  hm, I probably should try that...
7 - I'll keep that in mind.
8 - hmm....can't think of any sort of food that "worries me" :p
9 - *stops thinking* ... 2 sec later ... *thinking about Brianna Evigan being naked*
10 - Ok, this is what I always do wrong XD

just whats your problem? if your sleeping order goes that abnormal, then there must be some problem which really is abnormal somewhere in your life too. If you get up early, you feel sleepy early. If you sleep early, you get up early and sleeping order starts to work normally. just that simple.

:p Hmm If it's damn hot in your country in that time of the year, then a fan is a must else you will be laying in that bed all night just thinking about stuff.
trust me I used to stay awake until morning.

Ye, I probably should be getting one ... :D
btw, I live in germany, it's not tropically hot ^^ well, sometimes it's getting hot here as well... I bet this summer will be terribly hot compared to how cold this winter was :p global warming pwns us all

A hot bath should work. Try a good hot bath and then wait 20 min. In the meantime go read a book. When you're done you should feel very tired so just lay down on the bed if you're not already there and close your eyes and relax.

Edit: I thought I should add an explanation for the bath thing.
Many people believe it's because you get warmer you get more tired, but it's when your body temperature is decreasing you're actually getting more tired.
When you're in the hot bath your body temperature can rise with about 1 degree Celsius (maybe 2) and it takes approximately 20 minutes to return to normal.

xxdingo93xx, this happens, especially when you are waiting for some feedback. You are currently focused on the Hero Contest and your brain's stuck on Hive. I am pretty sure you think of Warcraft III. It's not a joke actually, you just have to lost some interest on it. It happens to me as well. I try to think of something different and it works.

You need to organise yourself; bed is for sleeping; when you wake up, have those thoughts flood your mind back again, but, when you go to sleep, you sleep. You have actually combined bed as the "re-consider" the daily events. Yes, people do think over everything that happened during the day, but when it comes to this point, you need some strategy.

Force yourself to stay away from gaming/internet for two days. You will then realize that your sleep is becoming better. Try this, whenever you are supposed to get such an absence of sleeping appetite.

Another method is to constantly tell yourself that you can't sleep. Results are surprising: You will actually fall asleep in the end. It's like trying to count sheep in your head, which leads to thoughts, additional thoughts that will cover your current thoughts, additional thoughts that will fire up your first dream and bam, you are asleep.

Best advice:
Be active during your waking hours.
(Oooh, mister smart-ass is talking...)

No, seriously.
- Instead of taking the buss/car to school/work, bike or walk (if possible ofcause).
- Take a walk when you get home, and one in the evening.
- Avoid suger and coffien, as mentioned.
- Brain-training; read a book, play sodoko or games that doesn't stress you.

There are many more options that you can choose from, like bathing and such but these are my personal favorites.

Ok, thanks everyone for all these hints, they are definitely useful for me (well, most of them :p)

I am about 70% sure what has caused my sleeping problem that day. Here are the reasons:
  • It was in the middle of my holidays, sunday night (-> monday morning).
I love holidays except of one thing - I can't do my sports since everything is closed... the dancing school, the gym, etc. I am doing sports 5 times a week for about 2 - 3 hours. I got used to losing my energy by training and without sports I don't lose all my energy, thus I don't get tired.
  • I got my mind lost in the WC3 world! As already mentioned by Pharaoh_ I am participating the Hero Contest #3. That day, I made my final submission!

Well, I think I now know how to prevent such sleepless nights. Thanks again to all members who gave me good advice :p

(Could any mod close this thread probably?)

I have some sort of insomnia, and I take melatonin when I can't sleep. I don't like being artificially sleepy though, so I rather prefer to spend 2 hours thinking in bed.

I didn't read all the posts, sorry if this has been noted.

I can't see the issue, if you can't sleep, then don't. You'll sleep better the night after, or the night after that. I'd say it's a benefit. I am grateful for every night I don't sleep, which happens to be a lot of nights, because then I can do everything I otherwise don't have time for.

Hahaha, lol. No, seriously, I feel like a zombie when not sleeping a night. I definitely prefer sleeping during the night.
