Light and shadows are not strongly related here.
Firstly you need a dark DNC model(cos you won't see the light elseway
Then you just place a light source somewhere and immediately you have shadows too.
The other way of making shadows is checking the object editor fields that have "shadow" in their name.
How to determine direction of light? Impossible afaik.
When talking about skins, the only light source is the Sun, which means the light casts from above, and that's how you should shade your skins, as every other Warcraft 3 skin is shaded that way.
