As far as I know, it is not possible.

Go to 1:15 of this video and you will understand that yes, it is possible.
I just don't know how he/she did it.



To unselect vertices make sure u r in "Select" mode under the tool bar then double click anywhere.

Thanks for trying but it's not what I'm looking for.
I need to unselect vertices of a face in face mode so that they can be extruded.
If you are having confusion with what I was asking for then please go to 1:15 of the video above.
 
Wait...don't tell me your question is how he unselected the faces so that he'd only have the top ones selected. If that's all you're asking then hold ctrl and right click drag over the vertices you want to unselect. Dx

Edit- If that doesnt work, try shift instead of ctrl. Not positive which it is.
