Battle.net is the official multiplayer platform for blizzard games and of course, including Warcraft 3.
To find melee games, any server would do, but Northrend is said to have games start the quickest.
To find public custom games quick and easy, it's recommended you use these two lists as opposed to the ingame list:
makemehost.com/games.php
entgaming.net/forum/games.php
These lists show many of the Bnet public lobbies, most being cross realm and some being cross server. You can also find a list of known active clans here if you would like to play with some of them. Basically, any realm for English speakers would do except for Kalimdor (Asia) to a point.
There are numerous ways to host on battle.net, each with their own pros and cons according to each individual.
1. makemehost.com
MMH is a partner of Hive and supports us. It's easy to user host through them. No registration nor download required.
2. entgaming.net/link/host.php
ENT is also a partner of Hive and supports us. Hosting through ENT connects to B.net and 3rd party servers at the same time (Info). No registration nor download is required.
3. Forwarding ports
This is known as the original way of hosting. While it does work, do note that this only hosts in the one b.net realm you are currently in. This usually equates to slower game fill up times.
4. Personal bots and clan bots
There are multiple places where you can buy, rent, or freely own a personal clan bot to host. There are a number of clans that have their personal clan bot where you can host through on their channel, though. Some are even partnered with MMH so that you can see their public games on their site. Simply find what you want on google.
