Make a copy of the unit using the model and add "Alternate" to the "Art - Required Animation Names" in object editor. Now that unit can be used as both the morphed form and as a permanent unit in the game.
In the triggers, you can add or remove animation tags through the animation part. If you know what the alternate animation name is - like alternate, defend, melee, etc. you can simply use that.
