that sounds good. You could also make non-perishable, un-usable charged items, make an invulnerable unit with an inventory and then use triggers to add/subtract charges.
 
well you can have 1 more resource by using multiboards
but the problem is
there is no current solution for restoring the amount paid for a cancelled building/training

eg:
you trained a footman that cost 5 <put resource here>, then you cancelled it, you can retrieve the 5 <put resource here> but if you have more than one units that cost <put resource here>, you can't check what kind of unit was cancelled.

you can check the cancelled structure using the Event Response - Cancelled Structure. but yes, there is yet no solution for a cancelled unit being trained. Event Response - Triggering Unit corresponds to the unit doing the training, perhaps you can use that and make it that only one unit per building/unit type uses that additional resource, so that you can check what building/unit cancels a training.

Well, you could find what type of unit is being cancelled using a complicated system. Everytime you order a building to train.. say a footman, this is stored in a variable array in the [0] slot, now say you order this building to train a knight, the knight is now stored in the [1] slot, and an integer variable is increased to 1. If the building cancells a unit, it will check what type of unit was most recently stored in the array. You would also have to remove the last stored unit when a building finishes training a unit..

This would be a fairly advanced system to create and I get the feeling wutrus isn't capable of such a thing yet.
