Make the Night Darker?

What do you mean by that? I don't know much about the lighting between day and night (although I wasn't aware there was much too know), but isn't the only thing that changes is unit vision?

Are you wanting units to have less vision at night?

You can also try with filters and fog it's pretty easy, but doesn't give very realistic effect.

WC3 default day/night models are insanely bright. It is possible the development team messed up the colour management pipeline.

Each 4*4 tile chunk and mesh is limited to 8 different light sources. When under the affect of more than 8, WC3 automatically selects which 8 to use even if the choice might not be optimal. Day/night model probably counts as at least 1 light source.
