I don't exactly have a screenshot with me, but I was playing it on Battle Net a few days ago, and strangely my babarian could pick up the basic mage staff thingy. But that only happens if you mass click.

Item Bug in 1.17

Dont worry about item bugs too much 
We understand the current one has several bugs With the inventory in 1.17 you can pick up any item if you click and move your hero almost instantly
For 1.18, we're replacing it with a brand new full screen inventory with a brand new set of items to fit with it
