I did not mean stealing models from warcraft 3 and using them for starcraft 2. I meant using the models here on Hive workshop which we already have.

And i cant remember a time when quality was really a big deal. You're still gonna have just 8 megabytes to cram stuff into.

Yes, you have 8 or so MB to cram all your triggers, data and terrain into as well as loading screens and stuff. Nowhere is that space actually used for models as those get attached to your map via mods or atleast should.

For the models here to be reused, firstly their animations will have to be redone to blend well into the game. Secondly any WC3 included textures will have to be redrawn from scratch at a higher resolution for it to use (and multiple layers). Then they will probably want to up the detail of the model as they are allowed more geometry. Then they need to create the mod setting up the data and actor so the model can be used easilly and finally publish it. However there comes a point where they would rather make a new model from scratch.

From what I could make out from phase 1 (blizzard never enabled custom maps and mods for phase 2) is that you are meant to publish mods of your icon packs etc while mapers who want to use them simply add the mod to the dependincies of the map and use to their heart's content. This will save you from having to download the same models for each version of a map that used it thus streamline map downloading. A total conversion made in a few years time might use 100s of MB of models, however if you have been playing maps since SC2 came out there is a large chance you already have most of them so the download might be only a few MB. Equally well if you have downloaded all these mods for a total conversion, any map that used some of those models will not have to redownload meaning they could be loaded in seconds instead of taking minutes for all the mods to download. It basically reduces data redundency.

It also makes it easy for artists to update their packs as a simple update to the mod will mean any new versions of the map will instantly gain axcess to improved or new content (after a new download of the mod). Their archival systems will also allow the old version of the mod to still be downlaoded for those sloppy map makers too lazy to update their maps so do not worry about bugs being caused because a mod is updated.
