Impale Single Question

I just got back to modding and just realized something... The skill Impale acts somewhat like a channeling spell. Order the hero to move fast enough - before he finishes casting the spell - and only a fraction of the impale length is created. It's a lot more obvious (and easier to cancel) if you change the range to 1000+ and the wave time to 1sec+. Also, despite "Cancelling" the spell, the spikes that show will still apply the stun.

Was this spell always like this? Feels really strange now that I realize it. :/
