I'm not sure if were thinking of the same thing. But if you limit your movement and thinking, you will beable to hold your breath significantly longer. Your brain and muscles use a vast amount of oxygen to function. If you minimise the use of these 2 factors, you can increase the time you can last without breating.

- Firstly, decrease thought processes. Just let your mind go blank. If you are thinking a lot (about anything), your brain will use more oxygen to support your thoughts.
- By holding yourself underwater, you are using the muscles in your arms, etc. Let yourself float to the surface (face submerged obviously) and thus cease the usage of any muscles in your mody. Relax. This reduces oxygen intake by the muscles.

I always found it harder to hold my breath under water than, just to do it out of the water.
probally the compresion of the water, being wet, cold ect.

You can't kill yourself by holding your breath (you can if you are underwater). See, if you hold your breath for too long, you will eventually pass out and start breathing automatically again. I lasted for 40 seconds, altough when I play the sax I can play much longer. It's cause of CO2, when you hold your breath the CO2 level in your blood get's higher and causes that feeling you get. So, try hyperventilating before holding your breath, you'll last longer.
