Editing in max won't get you any good, either model from scratch, or use oinkerwinkle's tools to edit.

I have borrowed a book about max on the libery. If think its called 3dsmax bible. But there is a cd with the book with 3dsmax 5. And the art tools and prophet mdl importer works with version 5.

When I come home I can see the name of the book, maybe your libery got i too;D

Anyway, I suppose you got max 5 bible, since there's one for every version...so look for 3ds Max 5 Bible.
And anyway, it comes with a trial version of max.

Google "3ds max 5 trial download". Softonic is a very good website for downloading this kind of software, so pay them a visit as well, that's where I downloaded the 3DS Max 8 trial.
But, dude, to be honest, get Gmax, it's free and has most of the features 3ds max has.
