Horror Atmosphere

I've come to here to ask people what would be good in a night time forest horror atmosphere.
Your ideas will help me greatly and I offer rep to those who give me some golden ideas :D

So what I'm looking for is a way to make the game scarier, like as of now I have trees that whack people, traps you can fall into, and a dark and scary environment.

Hmm, I guess:

  • Cam system, ftw!
  • Enemies that can't be seen unless they're in your sight range, which could be lower than the normal.
  • Black minimap, so that you can't track friends or know where you are.
  • Scary music
  • Sounds when you get seen by your enemies
  • If there's a boss, then something like a message saying that: "Boss Incoming" or something of the sort.
  • Dead ends ofc
  • Something that chases you, and makes you run around, or try to kill it.
  • Scary looking models, icons, etc.

May I ask what horror game are you trying to make cuz I'm a horror fan.
Here, let me post the map.

It is about 12 campers who went camping on a lake island, though in the middle of the night they hear one of their friends yell in pain and agony. Then after about a few seconds you and your friends come to the conclusion that one of you is not who you say you are. One of you are possessed by the spirit. The spirit can shift from human form to spirit form in no more then one second. The spirit's goal is to kill everyone and spread lies...

You cannot see player names, nor health bars, bunches of bushes can hide you, you can fall into traps, and get attacked by trees. Not to mention the game is totally dark, and requires a torch to see much of anything.

Looks awesome :D definitely should try inputting the camera I suggested well IMO haha cuz it does not just puts an angle it detects objects so it does close-up itself thus having no objects blocking ur vision.

Make sure the control scheme doesn't get frustrating, it's one thing to die because of a monster you can't see, and another thing to die because the character refused to go where you tell him.

Something like monsters you only see as vague shapes in the fog, and the occasional thudding footsteps and camera shake (think T-rex heralded by vibrations in the water).

Ooh, wait, had me an idea! Mess with the save system. Nothing like depriving players of their godlike ability to rewind time to make them tremble at every shadow.

Presumably there's a final boss, so make every save give the boss another hundred HP or something. Warn them of this by playing a horrible scream whenever they save. Conversely, have the game offer a chance to save at appropriate moments, like before and after boss fights (these "official" saves don't count towards the boss' extra HP, in fact, saying no to the save removes 100 HP from the boss).

Minimalist music. Shock tunes are boooring. Sounds that you would actually hear in a forest would deliver a more realistic presentation and gave more "ohshit ohshit ohshit" feeling rather than the "YEAAAAARGGGGHHH" reaction from shock tunes and Sudden Scary Images Popping Out From Nowhere Like They Had No Other Business (A.K.A. SSIPOFNLTHNOB).

Trees so many and confusing in pattern that even Minos' Labyrinth look tame in comparison
. Because getting lost is scary. End of the story.

Monsters only appear on clearings with harmless critters in the forest
. There's something creepy about wandering around in a forest, ready for attacking monsters but then... nothing happens. Then you get into a clearing, feeling safe, when suddenly ghosts. And then you learned to never trust harmless-looking forest clearings anymore.

Guess that's all.

Playing WarCraft III as a 7-8 year old in a time before WC3 was even made with horrible death penalties and enemies fading in randomly.

Now it is completly impossible for anything in WC3 to scare me the slightest. Infact most of what people recommend for horror I class as bad and annoying gameplay design.

The ideas for a horror survival are good, but yeah from the map it looks ok, but could use some more work done for it. So far its a good idea.
