Soo, since no one else made this thread, I decided to do so myself.

Yesterday scientists working at CERN discovered a particle which they are 99.9995% certain is the Higgs Boson particle. That is a very significant discovery for science, as the search for this particle has been ongoing for 50 years. This particle was the last particle described in the Standard Model that had yet to be found, and it's the particle which gives matter mass and holds the physical fabric of the universe together.

If they had found out the particle did not exist, it would've destroyed the Standard Model and countless years of work would've been for naught. Scientists would also be forced to rewrite modern particle physics. Preliminary results seem to point to the opposite, and scientists are looking forward to learning more about the particle and how it works.

The ATLAS and CMS experiments see strong indications for the presence of the Higgs Boson, and only time will tell if they've found the Higgs Boson, or another unknown particle. A more complete analysis is expected to be released at the end of July.
