can a hero gain experience from kills made by units (which belong to the same player) which are not summoned by him?

Yes, and the range you can see and change under the options Advanced > Gameplay Constants > Hero Maximum XP Gain Range in the WE.

hmmm this does not work. it is set to 1200 but even if the hero stands rightnext to another unit, which kills an enemy, he does not get any experience.

Trigger the summon so the summoned unit will be created for the player. Then the summoned unit will not "belong" to any hero.

noo, the killing unit belongs to the player, who also controls the hero.
and it is NOT a summoned unit thats the problem.
