Well you can change the gold icon to another icon too, by going up to your toolbar, Clicked advanced===> Game interface ===> (Check the custom interface box)===> then find "Icon - Gold " change the icon from the Gold UI icon to whatever you like. To change gold mines to say "Wheat: 12500" you scroll down till you find "Text - General - Gold" You can edit all the text's here and replace them with whatever your resources is. To edit the pathing of the goldmines you edit 2-3 values in the object editor,"Pathing - Pathing Map - None" You should set the pathing map to none you wont need a default map probably. "Pathing - Collision size" set this to how far away they have to be placed. "Pathing - Placement requires" Change this to buildable for now, unless you need something else later on. I have made a small test map for you.

Buildings with the "Return Gold" or "Return Gold/Lumber" abilities are hard coded so that they can't be built close to gold mines.

To circumvent this, remove the Return Gold/Lumber ability from the building in the object editor, and then create a trigger

  • Town Hall
    • Events
      • Unit - A unit Finishes construction
    • Conditions
      • (Unit-type of (Triggering unit)) Equal to Town Hall
    • Actions
      • Unit - Add Return Gold and Lumber to (Triggering unit)

Yes, there are different ways to change the amount of gold mined by different races, either by natural abilities or through upgrades to those abilites:
Humans & Orcs --> go to Object Editor - Abilities and look for "Harvest (Gold and Lumber)" this ability affects peons and peasants, just change the numbers in the Data sections
Undead --> this is trickier --> Object Editor - Abilities and look for "Harvest (Ghouls Lumber)" to affect a Ghouls collection of lumber (obviously) and for an Acolyte's gold, you need to look for "Blighted Gold Mine Ability" to change the Data sections in there, but "Gather (Acolyte Gold)" is hard coded to be tied to the aforementioned ability.
Night Elves --> the trickiest --> Object Editor - Abilities and look for "Gather (Wisp Gold and Lumber)" to affect the lumber rate only, and "Entangled Gold Mine Ability" to affect the gold rate only.

If you wish to make it so that all players can upgrade their rates of resource gathering, just go to Object Editor - Upgrades - Human and copy and paste (and change accordingly) Improved Lumber Harvesting... this upgrade alone can make it so that all player controlled races can harvest massive amounts of both gold and lumber at higher levels. Hope this helps
