Explain me the hero minimap icon?

I see that the texture for hero minimap icon is 100% white and it uses a model that when I opened it it has just a square of team color. In game in appears as a big circle however with team color?

I want to change the hero minimap icon to, for example, a sword that is team colored. I tried to do this with icon of sword with black background(for alpha), but the sword is nto team colored.

IS there a way to make a model or texture that makes the background of the icon transparent and at the same time make the front team colored?

I was trying again to change the icon. I made a 32/32 icon with a white circle in it and around transparency. It is showing in the game, but the circle is not team couloured? Why? What technique does the hero minimap icon use?

the transparancy is the alpha channel.
