Doodads - Minimap

hi there

i ran into a problem and i am not able to fix it(again :) ). At the beginning i had lots of units representing buildings. Now i want to switch to doodads because of performance issues.
Now the minimap looks quite bad without the buildings (which are doodads now).
By adding a minimap icon to the doodads the problem cannot be solved because
a) it stops at a certain number of symbols
b) are invisible on minimap aslong as the region is not explored yet (i don't mean the complete black mask)

There are minimap size and minimap form fields but they seem to be without any function. Maybe i am missing any flag(?!?!) to activate?
I was thinking about dialogs but this would be crazy work.
So any ideas how to fix this?
