Long-term special effects on units are kind of buggy. For example, an unholy aura special effect on a unit will really look weird when that unit turns.

The easiest way to go for you, is to make a dummy-art effect and attach it to the unit. For example, take Ring of Protect, remove the armor bonus, then change the art-target to the special effect you want, then add it to your unit/remove it from your unit at will via triggers or whatever.

When the unit is removed, the special effect is gone as well.

This is only true for very few models, one of them being Unholy Aura. Luckily, I'm not using that.
