Default Water Elemental model bugged?

So the default water elemental model can't be opened in mdlvis or in RMS. I tried both older versions from MPQ and from current patch (CASC). Mdlvis gives a "range check error" and RMS gives an "unknown error". The portrait file doesn't have this problem. Is there any way to fix this?

I tried opening and saving it with Magos model editor, and also tried an optimized version using my MOP tool. Still can't be opened.

Seems to work fine for me in mdl format

Oh ok cool, I saved it as MDL in Magos, then opened in Mdlvis and saved it again as MDX, now it's opening correctly. Thanks!

edit: god damn it, I copied all the portrait bones to the main model, and THEN I noticed the main model is fucked up somehow probably because of MOP xD

You guys had me worried when you said Retera Model Studio cannot open the default Water Elemental model.

Then I realized you were using an out of date version of Retera Model Studio, right? When I use the new version for the new model format added a few weeks ago, it can open the water elemental just fine...

I think 4.5 or something, not sure, can't check right now. But the water elemental was from an old MPQ, patch 1.28 or something, so not in a new format.

Retera Model Studio has no issue parsing the Water Elemental MDX file from patch 1.28.
Weird, it's not working for me in RMS 4.5m. Here is the model from 1.28.5, this is the error:
Unknown error occurred:
java.lang.NullPointerException: Cannot read field "layer" because "mat.layerChunk" is null
There are a bunch more errors after that too.

But it opens just fine in 4.6.

Edit: and saving it from RMS 4.6 as mdx also fixes it for mdlvis!

Okay. Yeah I'm not sure what's going on with that 4.5 version but I'm glad to hear it's solved in the latest. The "classic" graphics models like Water Elemental did not structurally change away from version 800 between 2002 and 2019, so that was from patch 1.00 to 1.31. Then the format structure changed to MDX version 900 starting with 1.32.0 beta in 2019, and by the time 1.32 released on the Reforged launch they were using MDX version 1000 format.

But I'm reasonably confident that the WaterElemental.mdx would be bit-for-bit identical on all old versions 1.00 - 1.31. I compared the 1.28 version of the file that you provided with the one in my Patch 1.22 install, and the md5 checksums were the same.

So if you have a version of Retera Model Studio 4.5 that can't parse that, it's just super broken and it's best to upgrade.

Yeah I've upgraded to the latest version now. I didn't realize mine was outdated until you mentioned it here ^^
