Dead Governing Body (Necropolis)

This bundle is marked as lacking. It fails to meet the standard requirements and may only have minor use.
I had another go at the Necropolis skin from my Undead Buildings bundle, but decided to upload the result on its own, since I'm not really sure it fits in with the other buildings there (if you decide to use it with them though, then that's up to you). However, I would and could not keep it to myself, so here is my morbid reflection of a Town Hall.

Oh yeah, usual stuff applies, credit appreciated, yes I used cnp, blah blah blah

Credits for the images I used (as much as I can find)

This photo of an Angel statue, I would like to credit the actual sculptor, however I can't find that info and about a thousand stock image sites and image farms have uploaded this image so I can't know which of them is the original, and I don't want to promote them anyway.

Dead Governing Body (Necropolis) (Texture)

A CnP texture with various sources to create a slightly more gritty/realistic Necropolis. However, it is entirely CnP and the texture looks a bit grainy and rough. I'm not entirely sure of how useful this texture will be in general and therefore...

Well I did use old paintings and photos of crumbling brick walls so the roughness wasn't something I was trying to avoid. I really wish that CnP wasn't treated as an automatic detriment on this site. You said my human-ish Naga siren looked like some freehand had been used but I genuinely can't remember if I did. I know for a fact the fins on my Snap Dragon were adapted from photos but you thought they were freehand too.

This skin might not fit the most common styles on the Hive but someone might be looking for this niche and won't find it unless they have the lacking box checked. It feels like you've rated everything except the quality of the artwork.

I wouldn't say it's treated as a detriment, it used to be CnP wasn't allowed full stop and a 75% freehand minimum requirement was in force before I become the reviewer then moderator for this section. So in todays standards we're quite lenient as we allow CnP to be approved although it's moderation rating will be low as textures are first and foremost a piece of art created by an artist and as such we wish to "reward" or recognise when someone makes a texture/skin that is of particularly high artistic merit. By that same token CnP doesn't require much time or effort at all and so is moderated based on that understanding.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that I think you should give freehand artwork a try, I do my own works using a mouse so it doesn't even require expensive equipment and in GIMP which is free software. Mr.Goblin's Tutorial! this is also probably one of the best tutorials on how to get started with it :)

EDIT: Also when you say "you've rated everything except the quality of the artwork." you are correct as it isn't your artwork and has been copy and pasted from elsewhere. You yourself say this is "niche" which means it doesn't qualify for a Simply/Useful rating since U/S implies the skin has a broader usage or usefulness to the community.

By the way, I'm glad you've made this comment as I think discussions about the moderation, the standards of the site etc are all really useful to the community and to other users. I'm always open to making changes, however I think those changes need to be based on the underlying rationale's that we accept.

I'm glad you're engaging in the discussion! I can see where you're coming from for the most part, but I disagree completely that CnP 'doesn't take much time and effort' and 'isn't my art'. It's just as artistic and full of effort and care as anything else- it's just the materials I use that are different. It is my artwork, because this texture did not exist until I chose and put these pieces together- with editing and modification. These textures take a while to do, and I find myself in the same artistic flow state as when I'm doing a drawing on paper. I'm sure you wouldn't say that isn't mine because I didn't make the pen and the ink.

EDIT: The artworks and photos I used to make my skin likewise weren't conjured out of thin air. The artists who made them used materials made by other people, the photographs were of buildings made by people other than the photographer. In the case of many classic artworks, the attributed artist often had apprentices who worked on or even made entire works and we don't even know their names. I used a photo of The Gates of Hell by Rodin in another texture, but Rodin had many artists who worked for him making entire sculptures. Obviously they should be credited too, but I'm trying to say that no one truly makes a piece of art by themselves, collage or not. So if this texture isn't my art, then the artwork I used from others aren't theirs. If this wasn't my art, it wouldn't need me to exist. But it wouldn't exist if not for me.

Perhaps I will give more freehand work a try, as I did in the void contest thread. The icons for my undead buildings were hand drawn IRL and then edited digitally. But I would also like to see other artists embrace and try collage art, which is what I'm doing. I generally do whatever style feels the most right for what I'm making.

As for the skin being admittedly niche, I made this as an offshoot from my undead buildings skins which I expected to be similarly niche but got a large number of downloads. Ultimately, people being able to see and download my work is the most important thing to me, and you have to go out of your way to include lacking resources in your search.
