I just saw a random guy in discord say that modifying units attack dice via research upgrades caused desyncs in his map. Does anyone know if this makes any sense at all or could be true?

Attack dice upgrade desync

Seems unlikely. Generally speaking only getlocalplayer causes desync. If the research is triggered with this option it could be possible. Hard to say without seeing the map or the triggers.
