Attaching a gun to a marine

I want to attach a gun to a marine (for example olofmoleman's clone trooper model) but everything I've tried so far failed miserably. In fact, out of frustration, I made an account here just for asking for help.

So far, I've tried: [hand, left], [weapon], [hand,right], [left, hand], [right, hand], [chest] in the Art Targets. I want the weapon to be across the chest instead of just being held in one hand, being impaled through the chest or floating in midair. I used devotion aura as the base of the attachment. Am I doing something wrong or do I need a trigger or a different model?

use the unit ability called "sphere" instead

If weapon doesn't work for you, then I doubt anything will. Keep in mind it uses the same attachment points and animations as the marine.
