“Hey Mr. Doleson.”
“How you doin there kid, how was school? Did any kids get their asses kicked?”
“It was alright and no one was in a fight.”
“Man, school is soft, weak. Now if you was born during the War you’ll be shaking in your bones right now.”
“Funny to mention that Mr. Doleson, we were learning about the War in history today, I can’t believe one man could be so powerful and so evil, even more I can’t believe this actually happened.”
“Look, no matter how “evil” you may think someone is, you’ve got to keep it in your head, they were never always like that. Monster or not, there will always be a time where they had a differently personality. Now I’m not a philosopher but I can tells you how I know. Listen here kid; forget all that bullshit you learned in class. I got ancestors who lived back then, they lived bout hundred and ten years ago when Buhszakhstan got its independence from the Kazakhstan. Don’t get me wrong, everyone knows about the War, but they don’t know it like the peoples who fought and died in it, so I’m gonna tells ya the real story…”
A bell rings within a rebel outpost, midday is seen and lunch has come. “Christ Dan, do you know that this is.” A confused expression emerged on Dan’s face.
“Well Tenel, they said its sloppy joe, without the buns, so I guess you can call sloppy soup.”
“Ugh, sloppy shit, man I’m left with the bread.”
“Shit, Tenel, you gotta eat something, here take my bread.”
“Thanks, so any news?”
“Well, I heard some talk about a new outpost being constructed near a coal mine.”
“Any news about our borders?”
“Not news anymore, our border just keeps getting smaller because of the new guard patrols law.” This is Tenel, an honest man throughout his life, hasn’t lied once in his life but had many conflicts with family over money and future life. Back at his room he brings out a needle and inserts it into his vein. His muscles now relaxed as he pulls out a paper, holds tight a pencil and begins to write.
Dear Samantha,
Hey there sis and if your wondering why I’m not talking to you through the net is because our connection is out, anyway hows it back in the city? I hope it’s alright there because it’s been hell here; food gets worse, today we had sloppy soup, even the name makes my stomach turn. I don’t worry I didn’t forget its your birthday today, I got you something but your gonna have to wait a few days because I’m kinda far from you, if I had to guess it’ll take bout five days to get to you. Anyway that’s all I wanted to say, and tell Uncle Meril, that I hopes he gets better soon.
“Tenel!” Tenel immediately turned around. “Commander wants you.” Tenel rushed to the Commander, and saw a line of unfamiliar faces.
“Sir, Tenel Washington here.”
“Tenel I want you to meet the new recruits, why? Well I’ve got a better idea on how to turn these soft men in tough hardened rebels. I pick take random soldiers who have been here quite long and have earned veterancy and you are a lucky winner. Your recruit’s name is Aaron Westly, you will be my test to see if this thing works, so don’t fuck this up.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Good, you two, dismissed.” Tenel walks back to his post while the eager and frightened Aaron followed him.
“So Aaron, you talk much?” No response. “C’mon kid don’t be shy, you’ll get used to talking to soldiers, some of them you can relate to, including me, didn’t talk so much when I first joined. C’mon let’s go the lounge, so you can introduce yourself to the soldiers.” Tenel and Aaron entered the lounge, the room that is often greeted by cigarettes and smell of ashtrays.
“Hey Tenel, who you got there?”
“Its some test shit that the commanders trying out; he is pairing veterans with rookies. By the way his name Aaron, Aaron meet Dan, Dan meet Aaron.”

“I’m sixteen.” Aaron said lightly.
“Sorry kid, your gonna have to speak up, war fucks up your hearing.”
“I’m sixteen.” Aaron said slightly louder.
“Sixteen, that’s kinda young, well doesn’t matter. Hey you guys want to see my tattoo?” Tenel immediately responded yes. Dan pulled up his arm and the tattoo showed.
“What does it say?” Aaron said with confusion.
“Its not that hard to read, look it says, R-E-S-I-S-T, right there.” Tenel pointed out. “Anyway I guess I should start showing you the jobs at the outposts.” Aaron and Tenel left the lounge and headed into Tenel’s watch station. “Okay Aaron, my job as a watchman is to lookout for anyone approaching the base as well as giving visuals of the surroundings of the base. If anyone hostile comes probably a chip head then I’ll take them down with the standard issue P6 Mark II Precision Rifle. Aaron responded quickly.
“What’s a chip head?”
“Oh that’s what we nickname the guards, since they are ‘mechanically enhanced.’ Oh and we have other terms, tons of them, like chicken feet, t-rex, battery face, steel toes, wire jaw, red eye, bolt walker. That’s all I can think of, but remember these terms alright?”
“Okay, so…how does your rifle work?”
“Well this rifle is built to be fired while mounted on a tripod; this tripod is on a conveyer so it can rotate around this watch post.”
“Sir, I’ve haven’t really seen the outside of this outpost. Do you know what it looks like?”
“Haha, good question, lucky for you it’s a requirement for watch guards to know the entire base layout and its surroundings as well as its location. This outpost that we are in is hidden with a waterfall.”
“A waterfall?”
“Yeah, you see the entrance is behind the waterfall, but there is a small opening to you look right up to the waterfall, and that small opening will eventually lead you into the outpost, you’d just better know how to signal that you’re a friendly.” Tenel looked out and saw that the sun setting. “Hmm, we’d better go in, it’s getting late. This is a good chance to meet the other veterans.” The two walked again into the now packed lounge with an even hazier layer of cigarette smoke. Aaron and Tenel sat where most veterans hung out.
“Hey, Tenel…who you got there, is he from another outpost?”
“Nah, he’s a recruit.”
“How long has he been here?”
“Just started today, I kinda know him, but I want him to meet the veterans. Mark, Welsh, Eriksson meet Aaron. Aaron meet the veterans.”
“Hi veterans.” Aaron spoke quietly.
“Hey there kid, my name is Mark as Tenel pointed out. I’m the head engineer here, nice to meet you. Make yourself at home here.”
“I’m Eriksson, patrol officer here, don’t be shy to talk to me, anyone here is a buddy of mine.”
“Welsh here. Try to relax here kid; this is your sanctum when you ain’t fightin chip heads.” Aaron approached to shake their hands, and saw an odd swollen scar on Welsh.
“Hey, can I ask you veterans some questions? I’m still a little confused about our cause, I know we oppose Dictator Vehrik’s plans and his beliefs…but why do battle other people who oppose him?” Mark opened his mouth to speak.
“Don’t hesitate to ask us questions, we will clear up anything for you. As for your question, many people do not agree with the Dictator’s idea of an ultimate nation, however our ideas of changing it are quite different. I’ll try to explain it the best. What we know there are four societies who are at battle with Vehrik’s government. The first are the Latrunculus, that’s us. The second are the Pillagers, a group of anarchist fanatics and one of the groups that we do battle with. The third are the People’s Arms; our position with them is neutral. The fourth are the White Children, a group of religious fanatics who work to overthrow the government and start another religious revolution.”
“Four different rebel factions?” Aaron said with amazement. “I didn’t suspect that there would be such a large number of underground rebels.”
“Keep in mind kid, that’s all that we know of, you can bet your ass there is a lot more.” Aaron nodded, and then begin again to speak.
“What exactly does the Dictator do that we oppose?” Aaron said with great ignorance and saw Mark gathering his breath to begin speaking. Mark took a deep breath.
“We fight because…we don’t want the people to become chip heads too…He’s a tyrant and a lot of us don’t like that. The way we approach most situation is one of the best. It’s called innocence. Innocence. C’mon say it with me.” Aaron spoke with him. “You see what we do is everything that they think a citizen with do. It’s not hard to figure out a loop hole on taking these guys down. You want examples. Playing cards are messages…porno mags are maps…cigarettes are microphones. Our way of approach is to take little details from a normal citizen’s items for our use. What we changes we give to these little details can make the difference between a position being successfully set up, or losing everyone on that damn operation.” A horn signals sleep time for the rebels.
“Well, it was nice meeting you guys.”
“Nice to meet you too, Aaron. Remember kid; don’t be shy to ask around, because everyone’s been in your position before.” Aaron headed to his room and sleep. He thought about if had made a mistake leaving his previous life to fight for a new order. His eyes were wide open, and shifted and turned trying to make himself go to sleep. He took out a pill, swallowed it and his lose of energy quickly pulled him asleep.
The day came along with a loud horn to wake the hardy soldiers from there hardly comfortable sleep. Aaron awoke slowly and was greeted with a headache; a blow horn then screeched which only made his head feel worse. He slowly headed to the bathroom to get ready for breakfast, and then headed towards the cafeteria.
“Hey Tenel…ugh…I’m still getting use to waking up early.” Aaron lifted his head to see a quite awake Tenel.
“Ha, don’t worry it’s normal for new recruits to be sleepy the second day. Hey when you’re done eating lets head to the shooting range, I’m gonna make you get use to holding a gun.” Aaron and Tenel walked down the hallway, pass the lounge, the forge, the engineering room, and the lab. Tenel noticed that Aaron was trying to imagine positioning a gun. “You’ve never held a gun before, huh?”
“I haven’t sadly…”
“Never too late to start.” The two entered a large white room with gun fire going off as they walked in. “Take these headphones, they will protect you from the sound, and won’t screw up your hearing like they did for Dan.” Aaron picked up a headphone, and pick up a pistol, breathing while he did, he aimed down range. “Aaron, wait, don’t shoot yet. Your aim will be ruined, because you’re too shaky, just calm down and when you’re ready, strengthen your arms and pull the trigger. Remember to watch out for the recoil.” Aaron looked at the gun; he then took a deep breath. Bang. The gun fired.
“Whoa…I imagined a lot more recoil.”
“Ha, listen here kid, that’s only a pistol, you want to pay attention when you’re using a rifle during a gun fight.”
“So, when I’m fighting remember the recoil?”
“Bingo, okay kid uh…I think I should make you uh…check around the outpost, a tour of some sort.”
“Okay.” The two walked into the lab, a white room full of scientists building new stealthy equipment for the rebels. The two walked as Tenel explained some of the tools they used, the computer sunglasses, the microphone cigarettes, the necklace cameras, the cell phone grenade, the famous STU stimulant kit, and many others.
“Aaron, I’d like you to also meet a good member of this outpost, Venin.” Venin turned around, and Aaron saw a man who is completely machine with only a few normal human organs remaining.
“Hi, my name is Venin.”
“Hi Venin my name is Aaron, sorry but I don’t mean to be rude…but.”
“Ha, I know, I get asked that question a lot, it’s not big deal. I lost the lower half of my body during a helicopter rescue, I thought I was gonna die. However, next thing I know, the scientists here were injecting me and trying to fix me up. They came up with a solution and made my outer body all machine, but unlike the chip heads we fight, I still have my self control and I won’t die from an EMP attack.”
“I see, so what is your job here?”
“I maintain all the cameras. However if we are under attack then I control both the cameras and base defenses while the scientists get to controlling the distribution of STUs and such, as well as medicating anyone who comes in hurt.”
“Oh, okay. Well it was nice to meet you Venin.
“You as well Aaron.” Tenel and Aaron walking towards the engineering room, until they were called upon by the commander.
“Sir, Tenel Washington and Aaron Westly reporting for duty.”
“Yes, I wanted to see how you two were doing.”
“Well I was just showing Aaron around.”
“Well, I’m sorry but I’m going to take him off your hands, I think its time he sees combat…”
“Sir, are you sure?”
“Yes, all men must seek combat at least once.”
“Wait; hold up, he has only been here for how long? Two days? You didn’t bring me into combat for until after three weeks.”
“I didn’t say you wouldn’t be fighting either.”
“What? Wait what does that mean…?”
“Both of you are fighting, because this is not my command, this is from the leader of our society himself. There is a traitor among us, and because of him, this outpost’s location has been revealed to our enemies, both our rival rebel groups and the Vehrik himself. Tenel you will be positioned here to defend the outpost. Aaron you will be moving to another outpost so you can stay safe, however, I doubt that you will have a safe journey.”
“Sir, what about you?”
“I will be staying here, I will command the defenses and if we lose this outpost, then I will pull the plug.” Aaron thought deeply of what “pulling the plug” meant.
“What do you mean by pulling the plug, sir? Aaron said nervously.
“This place will detonate…so that no other information can be spilled…”
“Wait…so everyone here could die?”
“Sadly, this is true and we have a high chance at that…move out, now!” Aaron rushed to his room and gathered his things, packing as quickly as he could he thought about what Tenel said when he was at the shooting range.
“Remember the recoil.” Aaron whispered to himself. He stood then ran to the helicopter on the roof of the base. He was joined by many other of the new comers and saw one of the veterans coming with them. He saw Welsh and was slightly less afraid. He approached and saw Welsh handing out standard issue ISL-12 rifles. When it came time for him to receive it. Welsh noticed him.
“Ha ha, kid I thought you’d be in this group somewhere. Here take the rifle, and let’s get out of here.” Aaron was the last in the line and boarded the helicopter.
“Alright guys, we are leaving.” The helicopter flew into the horizon, Aaron turn around to see the base. He saw a missile heading into base…and then a flash.
“Oh my…” Aaron whispered.
“Aaron don’t look back, the base just got nuked man, hold on for the shockwave!” Welsh screamed. “Hold on!” The wave hit, and they were safe. “Huh, we are alive…must be luck…” Welsh whispered.
“We are here…” Welsh said with great relief. “Guess commander was wrong; the only enemy contact was that nuclear shockwave…” Aaron was in a state of shock, he thought about everyone who died there. “Hey Aaron, listen man, I’m not a great mood either, but we have to start packing our things here, there is a possible threat of enemies coming here.” Aaron moved into his new room and begin to unpack; he saw his hand, shaking and twitching. Adrenaline. His heart was pumping and his mind racing hoping that the nuke was just his imagination. Gun fire. Aaron’s ears were not deceived, he heard gun fire. Then a soldier bashed into his room.
“Hey man, we need backup get your ass up and help us!” Aaron snatched his rifle and keep only one word on his mind. Recoil. Recoil. Recoil. Aaron went back out to the helipad and saw enemy planes flying over the outpost.
“They’re bringing in copters, I repeat, they are bringing in helicopters!” Yelled a soldier talking through a microphone. Aaron pulled the rifle up and set his aim, and then felt some pulling his shoulder.
“It’s me Welsh, get behind some cover man, you will be hit if you are shooting out in the open. Aaron and Welsh aimed behind sandbags. Helicopters bearing the symbol of Vehrik, ropes dropped from them and enemy soldiers roped down. “Shoot them kid, give them hell!” A rain of emptied shells fell from Aaron’s gun. A spray of bullets towards the enemies. “Aaron, keep your fire up, make sure that those chip heads do not get past you!”
Aaron saw the sight of enemies deploying giant android like things.
“What the hell are those things?” Aaron asked Welsh.
“Those are the chicken feet, they are the big and bad, so I’d better help you bring em down.” Aaron felt the heat from his rifle and stop to let it cool down. He pulled out a clip to reload the gun. “Keep your fire up, Aaron!” The enemies charged towards the outpost, however many of them perished, torn by rifle fire as well as machine gun fire. Wave after wave bodies fell like zombies sent to a hellish death by guns. The sunny afternoon was now soaked with blood as both side suffered casualties, many of them were recruits like Aaron. Then, Welsh saw the enemies retreating. “What the…they are retreating?” Aaron and Welsh moved back into the base slowly and shot a few rounds as covering fire for the other men. “Field communications, why are they retreating?”
“We fired an EMP bomb at Chicago, so we can recover and if they come back, we will ready.”
“Smart move there…” The battle ended, quick as it came. Aaron headed into the lounge and did not bother to notice that this lounge had hardly and smokers. The intercom turned on.
“Report, the Mercenary himself is coming here! All soldiers are to report to the war room at 6:30!” Aaron and Welsh both heard that.
“So…uh I guess you get to meet the leader.”
“I guess I am gonna meet the leader, you’re a veteran, what is he like?”
“To be honest, I’ve never meet him either. But listening from what the commanders say, he is an asshole.” The two went to the cafeteria to eat, they ate and saw the time fly by, and next thing they knew, it was six thirty. “Hmm, let’s meet this dumb ass.” The two walked in a line of soldiers all with faces that would easily tell anyone that these men are unwilling to see their leader. “Hey Aaron, I’m gonna tell this guy’s ass off.”
“What? You’re gonna get in deep trouble man!”
“And? This bastard made us leave our friends to face a nuclear death. Every commander that I’ve talked to told me that the 'Mercenary' has never even faced battle! Trust me kid, all the soldiers would agree that there isn’t anything more that pisses them off than listen to the commander talk about the leader barking orders at them.” The soldiers lined up. Then walked in a tall man, wearing very nice organized clothing with many badges hanging off of him. His face starred upon the men, making even veterans look away at least once, all except Welsh. The man came upon Welsh. “Hey there asshole, you the one sending us off to our deaths? The man gave him a confused look.
“The leader should be coming right now.”
“Well you tell…” Welsh paused as a very attractive female walked in. “Damn…now this is a good interruption.” The woman stood in the middle and spoke.
“Who’s the one complaining?”
“I am, and may I say, you look stunning.”
“Hmm, judging by how you act, I think you just about to been even more stunned.” She then stood and cleared her throat. “Alright boys, nice to meet you, I am Aelia Riel, also known as the Mercenary…”
“Hold up there…” Welsh said firmly. “You...you are the Mercenary?”
“Yes I am, and what were you saying about me? I’ve never seen battle? That I’m sending men off to their deaths? You’re probably taking back what you said about me.” Welsh paused and were thinking of what to say next.
“Heh, don’t get me wrong you are one gorgeous lady, just didn’t expect you to be the…well…the leader of our cause.”
“You suppose that I should be a man hmm?”
“Damn straight…”
“Well, damn sorry I wasn’t born a man. Anyway, you’ve got a complaint, I could give less then a shit about anything a sexist as to say…” Welsh again thought of his reply.
“I apologize madam that was out of line…”
“That’s what I thought…” She then turned to face all the soldiers and looked at every one of their faces. “Alright boys, I’m here because I want to see personally that we fortify our defenses. They can come at anytime, and I want to make sure that no more outposts are lost. While I’m at it, I’m going to see if the big mouth is located at this outpost. Now move out!” Aaron and Welsh were assigned to a hidden tower watching the back of the outpost.
“Hey, Aaron…our leader…just wow.”
“Yeah, she’s pretty stunning.”
“She ain’t just stunning? She is…” Welsh saw the commander approaching them. “Is a very good leader and a very good role model.” The commander gazed at both Welsh and Aaron, then he cleared his throat.
“Gentlemen, I am here to take your rifles and replace with P6 Mark IIs. So here you go…and I’ll take those rifles. Good luck to you men.” Welsh nodded and continue to until the commander was out of sight.
“Shit man, we guarding against nothing…is that bimbo fucking paranoid or something?”
“Well…Welsh we just got attacked, they could just send another assault force at us.”
“Last time I checked, when a major city like Chicago gets bombed, it wasn’t okay to just leave the situation like that.”
“You may have a point…”
“Besides, it is getting late anyway, and you know that’s when the Pillagers make their move against Vehrik’s men.” As the day passed, the two eventually fell asleep on guard duty. Luckily, the more dedicated and more serious men had seen no signal of danger approaching the outpost.

Recoil
September 11, 2088
“This nation's children are gluttons, fat pigs,
They take so much and we are not rewarded for this,
They will eat almost anything they can get their dirty hands on,
Mr. Strahn wants me to turn them into weapons,
Eating can be a deadly weapon I say, so let them eat,
Won't hurt them, so long as they don't know its human...”

Fool’s Gold
September 11, 2088
“Fear, is the most powerful tool in any arsenal,
Once you’ve stripped a person of hope and will,
They will show you their true colors,
They're not afraid to sell ones life for another,
Once the layers are gone, they find the savages within…”
