Just look at the shape. Blizzard would have given it a way more realistic outlook. I'll look into it though. In the meantime, giving us a full pic or a .psd might help clearing up all doubts, bigapple.

the icon is beast but its just the shape of the head thats bugging me. the top looks a little too big. and it seems to be sticking out too much

It looks great, and the only thing I could suggest is that the bird is a bit more defined in the outline, to be able to distinguish it further from the background.

I suppose this question is impossible to answer but how can you make them so "warcrafty"?
Is there anything you think about to make them fit warcraft or do you just make something and it just happens to work great with the game icon's theme? This especially applies to the axe icon you've uploaded recently.

not really. i just try not to use one color for example the edge of the axe, but i guess this icon is an exception.

I sometimes use burn and dodge and sometimes i use a brush set to Lighten with a low opacity. or maybe a darker/lighter color of the base color im trying to highlight/darken
