BTNFlameSword

After spending quite a time on spell, I try to involve myself in icon making as I actually love it just that all these while I don't know how to make it and I'm not creative enough.

This is my first icon made. My idea is a burning blade and here it goes.

A common sword that infused with the flame from Salamander, used only by higher-ranked soldiers.

How about it? I would appreciate if there are any constructive critics.

v1.2
- remove the light source at the handle and darkened it
- make the particles a little bigger and blur
- added some metallic effects (still not good)

v1.1
- moved the position of sword, added some fine particles, attached a small fire, brighten the flame a little

v1.0

Thanks to PeeKay for suggestions

Well, not so primitive misstakes, that cannot make me happy and thougth inside of you an good artist in a short future. Juicy and intresting light effect with ambied blood color makes pretty nice effect. But well, the problem about highlines bases on a missing defination from blade, it's shape is undefined and unidentified. I can give you suggestion - remove the light source on the handle and add some metallic reflection on the edge, handle. Also i find sweet these small stars around the blade so, i guess, you can make em lil bigger and blurrysh, currently they're lookin like dots. :)

Well, what Peekay said more or less. Highlights is well, lights, that sort of define the shape of the objects.
This sword looks quite flat, since it is mostly just plain dark. Try shade and highlight it with really "hard" colors. A good variety of really dark shadows and really bright highlights is a good way to go when shading metal.

Edit: Saw you've updated it, looks better now (could still need a bit of work to make it even better! :) ), the handle still needs highlights though.
