Well, you could make a dummy map and call it something like Load Progress. When one enters it, the game cache is loaded, and the map exits to the campaign menu, thus enabling/making visible the chapters which were played and the one the new one the player should start.

Don't worry about terraining too much. The gameplay experience and story is at least for me the best thing to carry a map high and the most immersive of all.
Eye candy is cute but if it's just a lovely cover with sour and distasteful juices, in the long run it won't hold. It feels as if looking at a picture rather than experiencing.

When in doubt, just check out some Blizzard campaign maps and take some inspiration.
