You know... Hopes and dreams are such fickle and fleeting things. Life itself is nothing but dream, waging war on the nightmare of human nature. Our kind has always been a dark and petty race, no matter how hard we try to hide it. Our concepts of holiness and justice do little but mask our need to dominate others.
I wasn't always such a misanthrope. Such a nihilist. Once before, I loved life, and loved adventure. It was among my greatest pleasures, wandering the world. Unfortunately, no dream lasts forever. My final campaign into the unknown has changed me. I now see two worlds, unhindered by the fog of uncertainty. I began to tire of adventure, of the occasional heroic act. But luckily for me, this expedition was different from the rest. No unexpected twists. No damsels in distress. No villages beset by horror. Just treasure, and a peaceful future. Or so I thought.
I'd heard of an ancient tomb, buried in sand, filled to the brim with riches. Filled with the undead thralls of a long-forgotten army. I would slay the beasts, and return to the surface, riches in hand. Yes, that was my goal. Wealth. It was my time to take my just reward for my heroism. For my exceptional skill and respectable strength. It was what I wanted. But you don't always get what you want.
It didn't take long for the expedition to take a turn for the worst. Many of the hired hands that accompanied me fell to ancient traps and pitfalls. Many more fled in fear, but I did not. I pressed forward, though I too was injured by the poisonous traps. My vision became blurred, and my body weak, as I pushed forward. Nothing would stop me from living a life of well-deserved luxury. Nothing except for the cave-in, that is. Oddly enough, I remember the dream far more clearly than my escape from that dreadful place.
Surrounded by spouts of blue flame, piercing thick shadows, I stood alone in a massive chamber. Before long, I realized what it was. I stood at the foot of a great altar, in a long-forgotten temple. Instinctively, I made my way up to the altar, firmly grasping a golden hand with my own. Suddenly, those unnatural blue flames surged into the altar, and through the hand. Through me. Images flashed through my mind, as my sight grew dim. Warriors in battle, stone monoliths, insidious magi, fighting for reasons I could not comprehend.
As these visions appeared to me, an ominous being began to appear. This mad beast, blacker than night, laughed mockingly at me. It was as if I was little more than a wounded animal, wandering into the den of a furious bear. Horrified, I began to tremble, consumed by an incomprehensible fear. Before too long, I'd realized that I was on the ground. Everything I saw was a dream. But I knew it was real. I knew that I had gained a power, and incurred the wrath of a living nightmare. I will find this creature, and I will destroy it, before it destroys me.
"I know who you are in the dark, I have seen it in your dreams." ~Shilas
