Someone tell me - how are these amazing terrains made? I just don't get it. IK there are some talented psychos on this forum, but it seems like common practice now-a-days, seeing how many maps feature terrains far beyond what wc3 intended.

To simplify: let's look at elredir's castle from top 10 legendary thread.
Image

Is the entire cathedral one building or its made by segments, aligning each to the other via pageup-down buttons and possibly black magic.

next, fladdermasken and Keiji's image

Is this even possible? There are under-bridges on top of platforms with stairs and ... my mind just unravels. Is this a playable map? If it is, I call hacks.

I can only speak for mine and fladder's terrain.

It is not playable, making such a terrain playable would take immense triggering and
programming far beyond my capabilities or the capabilities of most of the terrainers on
this forum. We're all mostly what you call "scenic terrainers" - Meaning we make our
terrains as a piece of art, a one-screenshot-only terrain to amaze. Don't be fooled,
though, there is never any photoshop or anything involved, it is all in the editor.

But it all also mostly only works from one angle, from where we've set the camera,
should you shift the camera around just a little bit, the entire scene becomes a weird
mixture of disproportionate lighting and objects.

Here's an example:

- The actual terrain.
- Seen from a different angle.

As for whether it's 3 dimensional or not, most of the constructions in my terrains are,
but I know that loads of terrainers only sculpt their constructions to look real from only
a certain angle. This is not a matter of possible or impossible, all the constructions can
be made into 3D, just most terrainers don't bother terraining what won't be visible in the
final product, I do it because I love making constructions. It's like an infinitely more
complex version of legos.

If you want to learn how to make such terrains, or get better at making playable
terrains, this place is a place to start, especially with the listed tutorials. That's how
we did it, through tutorials, through challenging each-other and through hours and hours
of hard work and trial and error with the editor. But:

Is this even possible?

The short answer is that it is possible, it's just extremely difficult.
- And far beyond most terrainer's capabilities.

Good luck! I'll be here to comment and help out, should you ever want to make and
post a terrain ^^

Those terriains are mostly static images that are intended to be viewed from one specific angle and not more. They are indeed fantastic but unplayable sadly.

There are, however, some fantastic playable terrains on the forum and map section as well - Marshmallo, APproject and Tomoraider, just to name a few, make really impressive levels and dungeons :)

oGre_ and Lexandritte are also names worth checking out if you want good playable scenes.

It's all a question of time. It's not that much more difficult to make terrains playable, except for multilevel platforms which there is absolutely no native support for.

What plays in better with static scenes, and adds the most to the difference in results, is lighting [/self-advertisement].
