wow i dont under stand WoW

This may sound a little pathetic and noobish but im a big warcraft iii fan and i have no clue what world of warcraft (WoW) is ive looked and looked some more but yet im still hazy.
is it a game u have to buy in stores
how do u play
is it an online game
do u make your own characters
and how do i get it
if u can answer any of these questions or tel me anything about wow please do im so confused!

You buy it in stores.(the current release date is November 15)

You make your own character(You can be in the alliance as a human, dwarf, gnome, or night elf or in the horde as an orc, troll, tauren, or undead)

Have you ever played the Legend of Zelda on N64? That's the kind of way you play.(As 1 character that can do many kinds of actions)
