Why does the Mothership suck now?

In the open beta the Queen/Battleship was horrible. Why'd they make it so bad?

Balance issues. A super unit doesn't really help make balancing a game any easier.

I am still of the opinion that the Mothership should be removed from the game. In Starcraft 1, Carriers were the ultimate super-ship... Why fix something that ain't borked.

Imagine if Carriers had a "Kamikaze" ability, that sent all their Interceptors on a crash-course with a target, each one dealing 25 damage, +5 to massive, +10 to structures. Or a defensive ability, where the Interceptors swarm around a friendly target and boost it's shields.

Blizzard developers got lazy. "Mothership". pahleaze. :)

Because it costs too much and doesn't do that much.

Actually it does quite a bit and I'm sure there are people who would argue that it's very good

The battlecruiser and queen are not horrible.

That's exactly my point. If you look at the alpha and pre-alpha when Blizzard showed Scatter lasers and the queen which acted as a massive tank then ya the current ones suck.

Actually, it does not suck at all. See, the problem with it is that it has a weak attack n stuff... WHO SAID THAT WAS IT'S PURPOSE!

Look at it's abilities. Move your army all at the same time, under the mommaship. When you encounter enemies, vortex them off. And then just sprint to your enemy's base and blast the crap out of them. When their army comes back, it will be too late.

The mothership can be nasty. If used right it can knockout multiple units from combat for 15 seconds or so. If the player is stupid enough to send more near the hole it will disable most of their army. On top of that it can cloak most of your army which can be a pain if the enemy does not come prepaired. It also cloaks buildings making attacking ACUs difficult near one.

Or atleast this is what it is like in custom maps with un modified stats, hopefully patches were in effect.

It is definatly a decent unit, but for support. Its cost is probably a major deterant but im sure its warphole move (what ever it is that sucks units in) makes up for it if used correctly in some situations. However if your enemy is getting numerous fast air units with long range it is probably a bad idea to get a mothership. Land units on the other hand like thors might get weakoned enough from its move that you win the upper hand cause 4-6 of them were not available for combat.

Also remember the mothership can move and attack, feel free to keep it moving during combat.

I only really get a mothership because it's the single coolest looking unit in SC2.
Yes. Also cooler than the Ultralisk.

Basically it's too expensive for its benefits. If you can afford one it's usually always better to get that expo or two carriers. If you dó get one, you'll need the forces to defend the shit out of it. The thing simply screams 'ATTACK ME', especially with that cloak ability(which is pretty easily countered). But if you have the air superiority, you can probably win the game without the mothership. It's job is already fulfilled by other, cheaper units.

wtf mothership is imba!
I nearly lost a game cause this vortex thingy sucked in all my units!!!!!1111
(actually it was my own ship and I wanted to know what this ability does and I'm unskilled and all but who cares)
if you don't like it don't build it
in big games it is worth a lot
reversed mass teleportation, suck in MULTIPLE units, cloak
of cause it's crap in many cases but there are a few cases where it could be of use

...and the effects are just awesome!
do you know how hard it is to make models fold together while the game is running???
(I don't but I guess it is quite complicated :P)

That supports what I said eariler about it being a unit of exploit rather than a staple unit.

If your enemy has poor aa and poor axcess to detection, a mothership can be lethal while you best avoid it if the enemy has a lot of anti air capabilities or detection capability.

One thing I found is do not use vortex if you amass a number of carriers, the vortex has a nasty habbit of swolling your interceptors reducing the vortex effectivness. Like wise if you have zealots (for some strange reason) it will likly swollow them than the enemy.

Do not under estimate how devistating a vortex can be if used on a ramp. Melee units likely will try and climb up but in doing so get sucked into the vortex, turning it into a battle of ranged units for a while. Even if they retreat, once the vortex wears off you will have some lone units to surround and swamp.

Thus I conclude with the mothership encouraging showdown combat, cause if you trap a significant portion of their army in a vortex the enemy is faced with fighting (with less troops for a while until it expires) or retreating but the trapped troops being doomed or suffering heavy losses.
