why are there so many DOTA-wannabe maps on B.net?

what are the key elements that make DOTA so widely played on B.net custom games?

why every newbie and their mom make a rip-off version of the map (ie: terrain, the river in the middle, 50 heroes, overpowering and imbalanced items)??

can someone make a DOTA-killer-map and have some actual strategy in it???

There are several dota killers already here. Check out the director's choice section in the map download area to try them out.

Everyone rips off dota because dota is popular. With such a well-known name, the chances of your map spreading are much higher. In short, its people trying to make a name for themselves while putting forth the most little effort possible.

I don't think there are any true DOTA killers on B.net, it's still way more played than any other custom map I've seen in public.

hmm, the director's choice section has some pretty unique maps, but i haven't really seen them in pubbie games?

MySQL (pretty funny nick :D ) DOTA is the other type of WC games , so we couldn't make DOTA killers , such as we couldn't make an RPG killers or Arena killers. A lot of ppl like to DL and play "dota' games and they like it ,i think, because there are a lot of heroes, items , and the betstest in-game action.
As for me i also hate DOTA and that's why i didn't do maps like it.

P.S. if you want we may make together a balanced DOTA with a fury number of heroes items , scripts and other stuff..
It will be interesting for me what i may do in a team ;)~

I think DOTA is an alright map, considering the one presented by Guinsoo seems to be pretty nifty with all the stuff. But once I kind of settled into the game, there's only a small handful of items to get for each hero just to maximize their "capabilities."

I thought what can make the game better? Then this small idea of custom abilities came into perspective. Heroes with user selected skills. It's like the ultimate "Craft" custom game that I've envisioned. Though it's just a concept idea, I'm sure I've not the first to think of such an idea, but is it accomplishable?

  • Multiple classes of heroes (melee, ranged, caster)
  • Each class will have it's own plethora of available to use abilities specific to each class so it won't empower any specific class or just have any set of skills to make any hero godly
  • Abilities will level up and stay permanant throughout the game's duration (though I heard it's not really possible to have the skills be leveled up if triggered to be purchased?)


What do you think? DOTA Killer here?

yes hero couldn't raise it as usual ability, BUT you may make a trigger wich will upgrade an ability and use for this 1 ability point.
( i may try to make a tutorial about this if you want)

also abount 2nd point of course you may make different abilities for different classes
dialog box rules for this !
the hard one trigger will be to remove used ability from the list of "choosing an ability"

i don't really want to make like 30 heroes. like, say 10 at first?

to stray away from the DOTA style of gameplay with creeps spawning every X seconds at the same time, what about creeps stationed in specific areas, the further you go to the middle of the map, the higher the levels? so like outside your base there'll be a few batch of creeps that will respawn in their spots after X seconds, you level up, the middle will be the big playground for players as they craft their specific heroes with the list of skills.

like say demon hunter has 12 available skills, but can only choose four to his disposal. you have A build demon hunter, B build, etc for different heroes to take on.

... ahhh what a dream... half the stuff i mentioned is probably hard to do or impossible.

offtopic: i can't get my 3dsmax or gmax to work. is there any other free 3d program besides gmax i can use? i think my 3dsmax 4 is waaaaay outdated.

Hmm stationed units.. just a trigger will creat unlimited number of them and then ut would be impossible to go futher..
WE makes possible to make locked number of unit type in a region by some variables...
about heroes.. hero may use 5 abilities + spellbooks
at D&D map i saw a good thing .. they creat 2 more invisiable units and call them : backpack(inventory) and an ability chooser (like saving throws in D&D and other skills)

may be by JASS scripts somebody may make them also anability chooser for improve number of main hero abilities...
(But you right that then lesser number then better, because ppl couldn't take all good abilities and they will thing about strategy of choosing..example:
poison,stelth,critical hit,morph) :D

You mean that if one of a yeam 1 have a level up, then in several seconds units for team 1 for defending the main building(unit)will be created?
it will be a huge inbalance because even 1 noob will ruin all "fathers" in the team :)~ and the same thing about leavers

Hey guys an idea for your DOTA killer:
Have the two side teching to bigger units so it will seam like a regular game instaed of the same units being spawned all the time. By teching I mean from footman to knight and ghoul to abomination not weapon upgrades.

Getting back on topic, me thinks DOTA is so popular because:
A) there's always action
B) it's easy to learn (can become a noob to a medium or good player in a couple of games)
C) the triggers are so easy to do for it if they don't include spells
and D)it's easy to use imbalences to kill anyone who you don't like if you know how (I know I've done it :twisted: )

Oh and another idea for the DOTA-killer, maybe add vehicles that the person can use to force the enemy back like tanks, unfair yes, but there could be conditions and the vehicles could be destroyed if not looked after.

i'm not sure about defending buildings. i mean if there were to be buildings, the creeps would have to move in.

i was thinking of more like a deathmatch type of thing. like the creeps will be static in specified locations, they won't run to any base to attack, they're neutral hostile creeps.

i think it's a little silly, but i was thinking of the divide and conquer map with all the bushes and tree places where the creeps are. and the furhter inward you go the stronger the creeps. maybe dead in the center will be a small arena?

this is all very sloppy at the moment but i want to focus on being able to make an environment for players to "craft" their own heroes, everyone with different styles of play. i'm not so much as concerned with defending buildings or anything.

the vehicle idea sounds like the super creeps in DOTA.
i'm still kind of skeptical about making a terrain like DOTA where both sides spawn creeps towards each other and "farm" gold to get items and level up to kill each others base. i want more hero vs hero action.

They did, and it was another Rip-Off. People think they will be popular, hence, I've seen Waugriff get kicked from games regardless of status. We don't give a **** about the rip offs

The only good dota was Eul's, and Guinsoo actually did this on one of his idiotic versions

Plus that idiot only redirects his fans to a trash-can website, and all it is about is using the most overpoeered hero.



I hate Lordaeron because 4/5 of the games are "DOTA 5.-- best version free porn!" and "plz host dota" and "dota -ar no noobs ****" and all this crap. Why don't people settle for the better ones? It's prety sad to see this, and I usually swear at those idiots, and at some point I will register to his hell hole website and spam and flame

Panto, i tried out your map for a few minutes. I REALLY like the way you made the abilities to be selectable.

it's in the ball park of what i'm planning, only without the first few skills for dmg upgrade, defense, etc.

i was thinking of something like that, that the skills are selected individually from "shops" or skill distributers, and after those skills that are chosen, get to be leveled up to like, lvl1, lvl2, lvl3, lvl4, and so forth.

If you have played on Azeroth (useast) you would know that a map called EotA or Eve of the Apocalypse has been gaining significant popularity over DotA Allstars. EotA is the DotA killer and has a large fanbase, unofortunatly the map isn't very noobie friendly which is what keeps the noobs away and the experts stay (lookly a little rhyme).

1.08 is the newest version and it is downloadable here, somebody posted it not too long ago.....

you know, the REAL dota is actually made by eul. www.thewarcenter.com

it's not a dumb allstar version where no strategy or teamwork is needed. dota on roc has a strong fan base. dota is all about strategy and teamwork.

currently, there is a dota league at www.sw0bes.com/league/ and soon, an official tournament version will be released by Ryude.


it's not the prettiest or the coolest map, but the teamwork/strategy aspect of dota is quite appealing to many. (i'm not talking about allstar noobs. allstar doesn't require teamwork).
