hello hivers

So, I want to try my hand at a bit of web design... My understanding of script is basic, but i'm a quick lerner. I have dabbled a bit, but before I get properly stuck in I thought I would just like to ask around as to what programs are available (and recommended) by others.

so, what programs do you use and recommend for web-design?

If you mean for actually writing HTML/XHTML and CSS, Notepad++ is by far the best choice in my opinion. Does everything you could ever feel the need for; highlighting. It's free, google it.

Any sophisticated photo editing software should suffice for the graphical design; GIMP is free and does what you need. Whether you use .jpg or .png is up to you - it's an ongoing discussion which is better; where .jpg takes up less bytes, it is of lesser quality and lacks the transparency of .png. I think .gif is generally considered obsolete.

It's a bit of a disagreement about the quality of it, but I generally recommend w3schools.com for tutorials and tips on web design.

yes, I want to learn the script bit. I've been messing around with some point-and-click packages, but coding makes more sense. (Provided you know the language, of course!) I want to see if I can figure it out... I know Chrome allows you to look at the script, so there should be plenty of examples out there. Anyway, thanks for the advice, I'll go check it out!

It's called auto-complete. And Dreamweaver has a load of stuff you don't need. I find it easier to work with something that is as simple as it can be. Notepad++ or even regular Notepad is preferable.

As for design, the best would probably be Adobe Fireworks.
