Anybody here ever played total war?

I thought of a map that would be somewhat of an undertaking to make that would mimic the RTS game play style of Medieval II: Total War. So in order for it to work there would have to be relatively advanced game play cashe system. You would have the super map (which is where you view your empire and all your armies and so on), and then the battlefield maps. When you engage the enemy the game is saved, and your taken to whatever battlefield.

This is how combat would work: your armies in the super map are items. Those items summon whatever soldiers. Your armies (or items) would be carried around by a hero who is transported from the super map to the battlefield. There your hero summons the armies and you fight your enemy. When an army is summoned, it would have to have a specific leaderboard. If... say 50% of your units that were summoned from that item die, you loose the item (this way you don't hold onto armies infinitely). If you win the battle and you kill the enemy hero, when you get back to the super map, he will be dead his armies will be gone. But if you loose and your hero dies, you'll loose that hero along with all of this armies.

So I figure after the entire super map is finished, there would be the individual city maps, and then the battlefield maps. You would really only need about 10 to 15 different battlefield maps and when you engage the enemy it could just function like a 10 sided dice roll and from there you go to whatever map. Or to add more detail it could be broken down into regions and depending on whatever region you're in, a certain map will load.

The problem is, I have never worked with game cashe's... so is this theory possible?
