Depends what country you are in, really. In the US, its a day for people to say thanks to those who have served and are serving in the armed forces, who keep America safe.
I served my time in the military both during times of peace and war and have no regrets. So its a special day, at least for me.

11th day of the 11th month of the 11th hour we will remember them. I belive that it is the end of WWI and the hope of the end of the world wars but that was soon broken and then WWII became. Of the allied forces; Australia, America (i think) and Great Britain (of the others i cant remember) when Great Britain went to war because of Australia still being a part of the colony we had to as well. Its like ANZAC day which is another rememberance day. Im not sure of all the details at the moment but this is a day for ALL of the allied forces to remember all the service men and women that died during the war.
@ben_xuereb: it is also an Australian rememberance day. You of all people i thought would understand this. It is a day to remember all the service men and women that fought in WW1.

This not so important to post on this site, especially at news forum.
Just a question, will many international be celebrated here? A big question is about 4 may, Workers Day, its celebrated in large parts of western europe while it is far from liked in eastern europe (of jolly good reasons), just wondering.
