it is to avoid confusion.

take an example of me.. i usually make 3 backup of my map to avoid an loss..

Assume if i make a spells entitle "A" at files A, B and C without version number to indicate it.

If I open spells A from files A via WE and edit it. Then what happen if I forgot which files did I make the latest update for spells A? You expect people to right click the files to see the latest time of the files being modified? Why should ppl do that?

It would be much easier if I open files A and see my spells with the title "Spells A v1.01" and files B with the title "Spells A v1.00"; it allowed me to recognise which have been modified.

Sort of like indenting at programming. :p

Well..
You update a map to a new version which means you made various changes.
In order to show the public the changes you increase the number in that map.

It is also easier to keep a track of which map is more bug free.
Beside that consider having only one map which keeps getting updated with no name changes. Do you think it is easy keeping a track of your fixes, and do you think that the public will recognize new versions easier?

It's up to you what you think that's better.

Well, actually there are three ways you can do this:
1. No version number. Yes, thats simple, but you might get confused what version it is, and it will take a while to find out trough editor.
2. Just writing v2, VERSION3, of something like that. This way you won't get confused with it.
3. v1.02 or something like that. Same thing as previous, but this way your map will look more serious because professional software's version is indicated the same way. You can say it's just a formality to make you look more smart.

Just wondering, noticed it yesterday.

So people would know that you updated it.
People that want to see a map change will just subscribe to the thread and everytime I make an update I'll post a new message with the changelog so actually people don't even have to check the version number because they'll know its updated when I make an post with the "Update - X.X.X" text.

Well I got here after playing a map I liked and finding in it's changelog that new versions can be found in THW. So see, this may benefit the to The Hive.
And if you really thuink about it, it's just a unnneseseary but useful formality which came up from the other mod making/mapping communities and professional software.
