The Red background could be change too a gradient like glow it also hide the (compression glitches/artifacting I find sometimes when converting the icon). Try increasing the shadow depths and volume between the scales of the piece. This will help differentiate the scales more, looks a tad flat. Other then that its a nice start.

Small fix, yes i agree. The red background covering the whole background area is distracting. Please just add a small red glow around the spikes and keeping some black background around it.

I like how you added a star on one of the spikes, but in my opinion the perspective was better on the previous version:
