Timeless Texturing #2 Druid of the Boar

Submitted by Misha
This bundle is marked as approved. It works and satisfies the submission rules.
My second submission to the Timeless Texturing event;
(and yeah it has no deadline, or i wouldn't procrastinate this much :xxd:)

Druid Of the Boar

(Inspired by the 'What if Night Elven druids, instead of Goldrinn*, chose Agamaggan**' idea)
and I'd say that i didn't expect that a shaman texture could turn out that boar-like. :xxd:
I kinda had a bit of a cut-corner as i merely pasted, recolored and adjusted the shaman's skin areas, because i just couldn't get the muscly bits right, and the shaman already had them.. so yeah.
(and blades too i think) But the rest is all freehand.

EDIT: did some further refining, but i'm not sure what is messing up the teeth in the portrait.. i have all the alpha there
EDIT 2: slight tweak to shadows and highlights?

Enjoy and give credit.. or the boars will eat your lunch :p

Hi!! Great job Misha. This took time and effort for you to get to this result, which I witnessed. Although it could get some little color and lighting adjustments, I think this one is approvable. Good job!

*Goldrinn is a Wolf Ancient who, due to his own blood-lust, though druids, sort-of created Worgen
**Agamaggan is a massive Boar Ancient, worshiped by the Quillboar

I think the old highlights looked better. This looks quite unfitting in Warcraft 3 because of the dark skin. Look at Furion, the Druids of the Claw, and other Night Elf units for a better grasp of how Blizzard did their Night Elf skin.

I also think you could add more Night Elf identifying elements. Similar to the druidic marks on the Druid of the Claw, as well as in World of Warcraft's druid forms. Signs of leaves, claws / paws, crescent moon etc here and there (especially as the team colour) would really make it stand out as a Night Elf and not a weird purple orc. Particularly his robes could benefit from those designs.

Finally, if you dye his beard and hair green or purple, or any other Night Elf-ish colour, that might help it stand out even more. Right now it looks a little bit too much like a recoloured orc in a brown dress.

.. define 'old highlights' .. sloppy thick lines that ruin the texture with their brightness? .. you'll have to lemme know how to achieve lill more highlights without ruining the texture of the fur, which is thousands of lines in shading

hm.. more runes does sound like a good idea, but i don't think they would be able to be in TC.. i'll have to take a look

his hair and beard IS dyed blue.. although maybe not as strongly.. should i go with more saturation, or a stronger hue shift?

I think you made it look better now. :)
Honestly, maybe the only thing I'd change would be to reduce the highlights on the hair. They're too strong, but don't go all the way like you did with the skin before, it shouldn't be extremely dark!

it feels a bit "flat", warcraft III tends to be a bit more brighter and livelier. The overal approach is very good but i think you needed a bit more stronger colortones. I tried some colors but triad seems to work the best by far, the beard and hair would like a teal tone, (colorwheel is added) the yellowbrown for the boar, and the purple for the skin. I did some quick magic wand(so it's not a clean edit i know) area selections to do some area and slapped some color onto it to do some good value patterning. Hope it helps

I disagree, as yours feels way over-saturated and.. kinda gaudy, if you don't mind my choice of words oO
war3 really has an odd balance of shading, highlights and color.. sometimes subtler works better.. sometimes not

my quick edit is gaudy for sure might even say ostentatious, no worries about saying it. The colors would match together to fit no matter how dark or light you use their tones. But due to maximizing color difference it offers area's of rest and detail by means of color. The depth in the tone can still be played around with. At the moment i feel the yellow on the claw somewhat draws the eye a bit. But getting a stronger difference in colors by for example a brighter set of green hair it draws the eye towards and area and might blend it all better together. But by no means is it a bad design. Maybe my point can be explained better a bit visually.

The blue (sven, rogueknight (fel champion), has his blue right shoulder and the yellow gem inside his blade to draw your attention and then eases you into the overall grays of his armor. The original Orc shaman does this with it's red runes(red needs to be less present to get the eye's attention, due the fact that our eyes are filled with a fluid that severely tones down the blue and green colors in our surroundings)
But since you chose for white print on brown-grey fur the rune are no longer a focus point to draw the eye towards. You could perhaps use just the green hair in a more brighter color to a similar focus point effect. But maybe a screenshot next to a druid of the talon and a dryad might already disprove my entire feeling.

@Lordlycan .. i don't see your examples as good, as they're setup for a different rendering system, and while my textures, admittedly, are a bit on the light side, they absolutely don't need that kind of saturation. It is you who should be working on further refining your own textures to avoid such over-distracting and gaudy details like that fire-beard on your dwarf, which for example, i don't like

so.. unless a texture moderator suggests some tweaks, i doubt i would be changing this.

Misha. Is it okay if I edit the Shaman model with this skin and then add morph and boar animations?

While some may disapprove, I think that the skin looks quite good. Although stronger contrast and better shadows could greatly enhance the looks :]

It's interesting how well the original model actually fits a boar skin - one may wonder if Blizzard had originally intended this, hehe? ;) Like the skin
