You can put a 2048x2048 in a unit or in the tile and it will work( I tested also a 4096x4096 ). I think the game reduces the texture to 512 when is loaded, but I don't know, people said that. Also Blizzard in his Art Tools said the texture has to be max 512x512, but the game don't crash if you put a big picture.
Changin the texture proportions don't affect the model. Because the UV map still there. Try changin the Archmage texture (512x256 to 512x512 and test it in game, it will work fine).
