well you can use two varients of the same unit (one with extended range and one without) then with the ability activated simply switch the normal with the extended range and whatever differences you want, and then swap them back when they re-use the ability (or use another "reverting" ability)
In DotA, I believe they use upgrades. The Dwarven Sniper has a range upgrade, and each time the ability is levelled, that is automatically learned for the player.
I'd rather go for Tank-Commander's style, though. Base the ability on Bear Form.
You could also do this by setting the range of a hero to 9999999 or something then put a trigger that when a hero learns an ability (take aim for example) will set the acquisition range of the hero to the aqcuisition range of the hero + 500 or something
