JJ Abrams' style is horrible, it will be painful watching him butcher the SW franchise.

Yeah... that's definitely a legitimate concern considering how JJ made Star Trek Into Darkness a generic action movie that can hardly be considered sci-fi. I'm not a huge Star Trek fan and I haven't really watched any of the series, but I thought it was supposed to be more sci-fi and less flashy action.

It's a teaser. Most people don't steem to understand this. It doesn't show anything in particular. New stormtrooper design, the falcon is back, a new (and awesome) lightsaber design which might get more into the direction of heavy punching. Most people just seem to like to hop on on the hate train because everyone does it.

And I really like it. It really doesn't show anything of the story yet, so stop hating and wait till more trailers come out and we get to know more about the story.

I'm quite a fan of the old star trek series' and I really liked the new movies too, I think J.J Abrahams will do a good job.

what's up with the Lightsaber, 1 big and 2 mini's on the side?
I have always liked JJ's work BTW, and I do have high hope, but *sigh* I'm really not sure about this one... I mean this is a prime example of all good things must come to and end, but I feel like there are those who can't let it go.
It was hard for me to see Star trek come to an end, and I like the reboot, but it's not the same.
All I can say is I have no real expectation, I just hope they know what they are doing :)

PS - Side note, I loved the Jurrasic World preview and I hope to see it!

That side thingy could be a guard that protects your hand in case an enemy lightsaber slides down against yours. But in that case it would be a really stupid design.

The other theory I've heard of is that they're heat exhausts that the sith had to implement because he/she was a noob at lightsaber design and couldn't build a proper cooling system.

It isn't really problem that they added protection to the arms. I mean don't almost all swords have protection for arms in different shapes and sizes. It just looks silly the way they made it.

And the reason why they don't come directly out of the handle but have a part inbetween is, of resource management. The handle is made out of lightsaber resistant material.

I don't understand. The Light part of the lightsaber is already resistant so explain to me again why add metal lightsaber resistant part. To protect your own hands from the handles of doom? Or if it is resistant why not normal metal handle out of that material only (why aren't lightsabers resistant anyway in general), you aren't going to cut people with handles anyway so no reason to make them mini lightsabers.

As for my opinion of the film I'll report next year when it is actually out. Never cared about teasers.

There were so many cut off hands, no wonder they implented such a thing.

And the reason why they don't come directly out of the handle but have a part inbetween is, of resource management. The handle is made out of lightsaber resistant material.

If that was the case they wouldn't need the lightsaber part of the guard at all, the metal would suffice.

Well, there are some metals in the SW universe that are lightsaber resistant, like Mandalorian iron. But again, if the metal was made from that, then the lightsaber extensions would be utterly useless and the guard would be ridiculously wide.

I can only specualte too, but I think you've made the right guess. If the light would come out directly of the handle, you would probably hurt yourself more often.
And this way you can harm your enemy with it too, just like in medieval times.

Can't wait to see a sith perform a murder strike while wearing Mandalorian iron gloves

In medieval times you would grab the blade and use the guard as an armor penetrating blunt-ish weapon, I can't imagine a situation where it would be useful without grabbing the blade, which you obviously can't do with a lightsaber.

I was more thinking about like, you are in a pat situation, where you're holding your lightsabers at each other, and then bam, the side-guard comes out, harming your oponents hands/face whatever.

In that kind of a situation you could just pivot your sword and cut through the enemy without any effort. In that situation the hilt guard would be useful though, since the enemy blade might slide during the pivoting.

Ahem we're discussing a laser sword with a laser that magically only extends about a meter and can repel another such laser. In such a discussion, logic and sense play second fiddle to the rule of cool.

I think it's a cool addition, one of the few things I liked about the trailer. There will probably be a creative fight scene to make use of this feature, and from a visual design perspective it would be handy if this sith were to fight another one.

What they really need is a lightwhip. That's right, a whip made out of ligthsaber stuff. It would entangle the enemy saber, making any attempts at blocking useless. Blocking those pesky laser guns would also be easy, you could just swing it around and the beams would be hurled away.

Lightwhip is real.

And rule of cool counts when it is cool, and mini sabres are kinda more silly than cool. Of course we are all entitled to our opinions right? You either like it or you don't there is no "correct" answer. I personally prefer fanmade version where handles were part of the main saber but sadly I can't find the picture of it. Actually I am glad that this sword exists as now we have many many fun versions.

What they really need is a duel where both of the combatants are wearing a full mandalorian armor, which basically turns it into a medieval duel. The one who manages to slide their lightsaber down the enemy's helmet slit wins (or they could even grab the saber with their ligthsaber-resistant gloves and perform a murder-strike).
