Hi! I'm working on the dreaded Scholomance and I'm running out of ideas... I've been using some maps and photos from the WoW map as references. Do you have any suggestions for things I could add? The map is still missing some 'islands' around the school. The image doesn't have visual effects or shadows yet—any feedback or critiques?


This map is part of a campaign series that focuses on the Lordaeron army shortly after Arthas' return. So in the Warcraft universe, it's set during the first Undead Campaign.

My recommendation for this type of stuff (from my own experience) is that taking inspiration from WoW for areas and terrain is usually a solid idea, however it should only be used a general layout and reference. In terms of the specifics of the terrain itself you should adapt that to the gameplay or mission itself. For example having the recognisable island, road across the coast etc is good but beyond that in terms of size of the island, what's on the island etc that should all be adapted for your mission and objectives :). Other than that it looks really good so far from the screenshots.

Minha recomendação para esse tipo de coisa (com base na minha própria experiência) é que se inspirar no WoW para áreas e terrenos costuma ser uma boa ideia, mas deve ser usado apenas como referência e layout geral. Em termos das especificidades do terreno em si, você deve adaptá-las à jogabilidade ou à missão em si. Por exemplo, ter uma ilha reconhecível, uma estrada cruzando a costa etc. é bom, mas, além disso, em termos de tamanho da ilha, o que há nela etc., tudo deve ser adaptado à sua missão e objetivos :). Tirando isso, parece muito bom até agora pelas capturas de tela.

That's exactly how I feel about it — it's why I made the real Scholomance have a darker atmosphere and created an entirely new path to reach it (which doesn't exist in canon), simply because getting there in a straight line isn't that interesting.
